Black Forest by Mountainview Brewing Co.

Lee W is drinking a Black Forest by Mountainview Brewing Co. at Harrison Hot Springs

First thoughts: again, chocolate-covered cherries on the nose; dark, not-overly-sweet cherry truffles with just enough cacao bitterness on the palate. The body drinks appropriately for its ABV and style, not too chewy or cloying.

English Toffee Amber Ale by Old Yale Brewing Co.

Lee W is drinking an English Toffee Amber Ale by Old Yale Brewing Co. at Harrison Hot Springs

First thoughts: this one was also pretty good, with the sweet toffee/caramel notes pairing well to the malty style. The sweetness seemed to come in waves as I drank: generally subtle but sometimes a bit much for my preferences. Totally drinkable though!

Irish Cream Amber Ale by Old Yale Brewing Co.

Lee W is drinking an Irish Cream Amber Ale by Old Yale Brewing Co. at Harrison Hot Springs

First thoughts: slight Irish cream sweetness on the nose, shortbread cookie vibes pairing well to the malt character of the beer. The palate was surprisingly well balanced though, a bit of tea-like bitterness to temper its moderate body. Got a second can.

Abyssus Kriek - 2023 by Driftwood Brewery

Lee W is drinking an Abyssus Kriek - 2023 by Driftwood Brewery at Harrison Hot Springs

First thoughts: vibrant cherry funk on the nose, carrying through on the brilliantly tart palate. Notes of barrel vanilla and slight baking spices. Slight regret from not washing out my cup, as there was a bit of residual Black Forest (it fit, at least!)

Black Forest by Mountainview Brewing Co.

Lee W is drinking a Black Forest by Mountainview Brewing Co. at Harrison Hot Springs

First thoughts: sweet chocolate-covered cherries on the nose, carrying through on the medium-bodied palate. The lactose isn’t overdone and neither is the sweetness. This one was a little sweeter than their mint chocolate stout but cherry tartness helps!

First thoughts: light and clean, a bit of floral hops and bread character on the palate. Without much offence or flavour to speak of!

Rum Barrel Aged Kindling 2023 by Cannery Brewing

Lee W is drinking a Rum Barrel Aged Kindling 2023 by Cannery Brewing at Harrison Hot Springs

First thoughts: roasty caramel, banana bread on the nose; the palate opens with a hit of barrel spice (maybe carbonation?) and moves through roasty coffee and dark chocolate, with a beautiful balance of rich sweetness and dark bitter intrigue.

Gentle Giant by Mountainview Brewing Co.

The beginnings of something great here! Molten, roasty dark chocolate with a touch of herbal mint on the nose – After 8s for sure! The palate wonderfully balances cacao bitter notes with an elevating, fresh peppermint character. Rather dry and intriguing

Double Scoop Strawberry Elderflower Sour by Field House Brewing Co.

Lee W is drinking a Double Scoop Strawberry Elderflower Sour by Field House Brewing Co. at Harrison Hot Springs

Elderflower notes show up more on the nose, though the lightly strawberry ice cream palate is enhanced by some subtle underlying florality too. Very smooth and creamy, perhaps too much for my preference. Could use more tart to balance the sweetness too.

Down Easy Pale Ale by Hoyne Brewing

In short: a nice balance of sweet, light malt, and bright hop character (of the floral or piney persuasion)

Corona Extra by Grupo Modelo

In short: inoffensive, light malty character throughout, with a slight sweetness. The squirt of fresh lime juice always manages to bump it up to 3.5.

JADE. by Sidekick Brewing

Lee W is drinking a JADE. by Sidekick Brewing at Harrison Hot Springs

Lactic funk and bright, fresh plum on the nose. The palate was delightfully tart and full of underripe stone fruit flavour, balanced with just enough sweetness. I’ve really liked these sours we brought back from Sidekick, worth seeking out!

EVERETT by Sidekick Brewing

Lee W is drinking an EVERETT by Sidekick Brewing at Harrison Hot Springs

Piney and slightly resinous hops on the nose. The palate brought more evergreen hop character, balanced well by a pleasant honeyed malt backbone. Pretty flavourful, not too too bitter – along the same vein as the gin IPA from Bricklayer we had earlier.

Sparkle Party Pale by Field House Brewing Co.

Lee W is drinking a Sparkle Party Pale by Field House Brewing Co. at Harrison Hot Springs

An absolute foam party worth of fluffy head on these bad boys. An impressive amount of tropical passion fruit and citrus on the nose. The palate is light and dry but smooth, bright, and fruity: more passionfruit, some lime zest. Will crush some more soon.

Very light malt/bread nose on this one. The palate is a pleasing balance of coppery malt and floral hops, with a decent amount of cereal sweetness. Many memories with this beer, but it’s very much an easygoing middle-of-the-road brew – summer night beer!
