Captain Cooker White Manuka Beer by The Mussel Inn

Luke Burnet is drinking a Captain Cooker White Manuka Beer by The Mussel Inn at Huia Settlers Museum

Very aromatic beer to be sure, vaguely based off a recipe Captain Cook made for his sailors upon landing in the dusky sound to ward off scurvy. It's not bad! It's almost an original NZ Vienna Lager. Red, malty but with manuka on the finish.

As far as hazies go, this is actually alright! Very light bodied and obviously quite hoppy yet not over the top. Very clean and refreshing, and very much hits the spot this time of year. Cheers!

Brewers, sit up and take notice! And stop with the IPA's for just one second - this beer is putting you all to shame. Please start making more beers like this one. IPA's and hazy beers that aren't wheat are soooooooo last week now.

Ok holy fuck is that tangy? Please crank some Ray Price - Nightlife, when sampling this. Man this beer is solid malt and TANGY bitter orange peel hops. Jeez, where the hell was I? Lost in the moment I guess... sorry, where was I?

Kotsberg Strong by Devans Modern Brewery

Bloody suspicious this one! The name got me. It's an Indian strong lager with a German name and I fell for it. The taste is hard to describe. A bit like a buttery chardonnay minus the class and plus the fizz. Buy this for someone you don't like.

Brain Smiles - Hazy Pale Ale by Behemoth Brewing Company

Luke Burnet is drinking a Brain Smiles - Hazy Pale Ale by Behemoth Brewing Company at Huia Settlers Museum

Hazies are very much an acquired taste IMO. The head doesn't hang around much either which is disappointing but I guess that's the nature of this beer. I hate to say it but hazies all seem to very much just taste and look the same. :/

Very curious, but not too bad. Quite refreshing with very subtle hints of apricot.

Longboarder by McLeod's Brewery

Luke Burnet is drinking a Longboarder by McLeod's Brewery at Huia Settlers Museum

As far as lagers/Pilsners go, there is some flavour here which is important. Cracker-like maltiness (their words) is correct, and quite nice. The hops are there but in the distance, which is good. Tasty clean and refreshing. A surf club beer. Cheers!

Danish Pilsner by Carlsberg Group

Luke Burnet is drinking a Danish Pilsner by Carlsberg Group at Huia Settlers Museum

Lager. Invented sometime around 1876. It was thought of as a champagne style of beer. Crystal clear, lively, light but very lacking in taste. Some could argue that lagers are delicately flavoured. I tend to disagree. But it's a good breakfast or lawn beer

Highwayman APA by Shining Peak Brewing

Luke Burnet is drinking a Highwayman APA by Shining Peak Brewing at Huia Settlers Museum

Really good example of an APA, also there's a bit of local history on the can. I actually like this beer for that alone! They should be serving this stuff in museum's. Decent malt character and not overly hoppy, but still delivers flavour. A fine beer!

XPA by Sawmill Brewery

Luke Burnet is drinking a XPA by Sawmill Brewery at Huia Settlers Museum

Extra Pale Ale eh? So, light in malt, strong in hops and crystal clear. Soooo, basically a pilsner with ale yeast? And usually around 4.8%. Never understood the XPA, but they need to create an XPAOC - Extra Pale Ale On Crack. 7.5% Dooo eeeeeit!!

Pale Ale by Epic Brewing Company

Quite possibly the beer that started this whole IPA craze? It was once one of the strongest tasting beers around. Other IPA's have since caught up, and quite possibly overtaken? Still a very good drop.

Halo Pilsner by Liberty Brewing

Liberty Brewing! My soon to be close to home brewery! This is a nice full pilsner that isn't too overboard on the hops and gives a fresh clean finish. This is a very good classic example of how a Pilsner beer should be. Not complicated. Cheers!

Holy heck! First impression is a bit like being whacked in the face by a giant peach. 95bfm promote Parrotdog so I've always wondered. Hazies aren't exactly my thing but this isn't too bad. Light golden, and who doesn't like a yellow hammer finch? :)

Super Alpha by North End Brewing

Light and refreshing! This is the pale ale you want after trying to destroy the lawns with a knackered electric mower. Also great with Mexican food. You'll end up biffing the mower off a cliff! Clean and citrusy but not heavy. :)

Haze - Hazy Pale by Deep Creek Brewing Co.

Luke Burnet is drinking a Haze - Hazy Pale by Deep Creek Brewing Co. at Huia Settlers Museum

I've always found these hazy IPA's really weird, they're almost a contradiction. The hops are meant to preserve the beer and yet the hop oil used to create the haze has a very short shelf life. Imagine alcoholic cloudy orange juice and you get the idea...

Very nice sesh beer, if they sold it by the crate this would be my crate day beer. Mild malt and equally balanced delicate hops. All those crate beers would have started out tasting like this back in the day. A bit more real.
