AOTEAROA PALE ALE - NZAPA (previously named KAPAI)
There’s a pile of clichés we won’t deploy here attesting to the fact that you can never take anything in this world for granted. Sure enough, just as Tuatara’s beloved American Pale Ale looked like getting bigger than Texas, our supply of the mighty American hops that defined it started to go wobbly on us. Undeterred, we set to crafting a local solution. Aotearoa Pale Ale takes the spirit of the old APA and reanimates it with a hopping regime that’s as kiwi as a 25 year mortgage. The same-but-different local recipe (Pacific Jade, Cascade, Sauvin and Wai-iti for all you trainspotters) is well within the remit of the original APA, but with a deep, long, new age flavour profile. Wheat beers have been around for centuries, but you can still startle unsuspecting New Zealanders with a good one. Most beer malts are barley-based, but a portion of wheat in the mash results in a sweeter, cloudier base. In combination with a Weinstephan yeast, this produces distinctive flavours of ripe banana, vanilla and clove. (Don’t be alarmed, they all do that.) Hop additions are used to balance the sweetness.

The hops are always greener on the other side, in this case the other side of Cook Strait. There’s only one way to get those cones to the North Island in prime condition and that’s to scramble the jets. OK, it’s to scramble a single engine prop plane with the seats taken out, but be assured that the 800kg of green hops that went into Conehead 2015 were flown direct from Nelson to Paraparaumu in an actual plane, touching down right next door to the Tuatara Brewery. One short hop for a brewer, one giant green-hopping for mankind.

Tuatara Ardennes is a strong, Belgian-style ale. There’s no missing the strong bit – 6.5% alc/vol should be fairly self-explanatory – but the Belgian half of the equation is the result of Carl’s obsession with the style. In creating his own version he’s named it after the Ardennes yeast that gives it all those spicy orange notes. He was also fairly obsessed with making it drinkable, so drinkable in fact that we may have to redirect your attention to the 6.5% alc/vol bit. Don’t get carried away now. Read Less

Greetings stout lovers. At Tuatara we know your dedication to toasted malts requires no embellishment, so for you we have our brilliant, elemental BLACK. Using everything from Roasted Barley to Dark Crystal (yeah, that’s a thing) we’ve popped the 5-grain into the toaster to create a malt base of opulent Cimmerian shade. And to ensure you’re not losing out to all those pale ale bores, we’ve hopped things up a bit with buckets of Pacific Jade, Chinook, Citra, Amarillo and Centennial. It’s a big one, so don’t overdo it.

Tradition says that IPAs need to be generously hopped with English ‘brace yourself for the bitterness’ hops. We’re proud of our Commonwealth roots but not afraid to shake off the shackles and embrace the Home of the Brave. Yep, American Dank has gone South. Pungent, Resinous, Sticky. So many American hops were shoveled into the boil that a highly resinous slick emerged. Big and extroverted, Hi-Res shows off some fruit on the nose and a kind of earthy, herbaceous complexity. Dank, but not in a Dunedin student digs type way.
Look : Golden Copper aroma : Piney, resinous supported by citrus and tropical fruits.
Taste : Full mouth feel, juicy, highly resinous finishing with citrus and tropical fruit characters. Restrained bitterness.
Hops : Columbus, Simcoe, Centennial MALT : American Ale, Pilsner, Toffee, Aurora
Alcohol(ABV) : 6.8% Bitterness(IBU) : 55
