Tropical Parade is a spirited, bright IPA with citrus flavours of
grapefruit and tropical fruit hoppiness from an explosive blend of
American West Coast hops. These specialty hops are world renown
for their big, impactful flavours and the unique citrus, resiny notes
they impart. The legend of India Pale Ale describes a strong, hoppy
beer designed to withstand the journey from England, around the
Cape and on to India. The journey we took to make Tropical Parade
IPA brought us from the soul city of New Orleans to the Mother City.

This ale undergoes a wild culture primary fermentation in a large french oak pinot barrel and then is aged in a special mixed culture tank. This blended fermentation creates fruity and funky pineapple and pear notes, spice and dry exotic flavours. We use a blend of malts that give it grassy malt undertones, wheat malt to give it a soft body and specialty oats from Simpsons Malting to lend a sweet granola middle. The fermentation flavours are rounded out by dry hopping with chardonnay-like Hallertau Blanc and woody Bravo hops. Coastal Sage and Citronellum Pellargonium selected for us by our friends at the Cape Hope Nursery are picked fresh and contribute additional citrus and woodsy earth notes. Read Less

culture. Think of it as a modern rendition of traditional sorghum beer,
Umqombothi. We've blended European barrel-ageing techniques with African
methods of sour mashing and open, natural fermentations for a first of its kind
ale. A batch of Umqombothi was blended with our mixed culture farmhouse
ale and a two year old barrel-aged brett beer. This finished blend was
refermented and matured in an oak barrel.
This beer is fascinating and unique. Flavours of cream pear, citrus & honey
meld into a sticky barrel character, balanced by acidity and funky grain notes

Is a historical, barrel aged, Imperial IPA refermented with the wild yeast Brettanomyces. India Pale Ales were originally hoppy, aged beers that
voyaged from England, around the Cape, to India. They were strong and bitter, and unlike today's fresh versions, typically conditioned over a few years in oak casks. This aging created a sparkling secondary fermentation with the wild yeast Brettanomyces, or Brett, which strengthened the beer and added a dry, distinct, eervescent character.
To celebrate this historic style, we recreated an 18th century imperial IPA, aging it in french oak with a few brett strains for three years then recharging it with a fresh, hoppy batch.
The dry, complex character from the brett enhances the fruity, pineapple and citrus hop flavours. The bright,
citrus hop flavours shine brightly with a crisp, minty oak finish. Read Less

brewer's malt. It was brewed with a largely forgotten brewing tradition
called parti-gylemashing, only utilizing the sweetest,most
concentrated grain sugars.The result is layered malt flavours of dried
apricot, vanilla, golden raisins and toasted nuts. An extended boil,
intense fermentation and long aging period on lees add a big fruity,
savoury dimension to these malt notes and an oily, warming and
chewy body. Centennial and Cascade hops bring a citrus element,
lending a dryness to the finish. This extravagant ale will keep you

This fruited tart beer is a blend of two wild fermented, barrel aged beers. One barrel was aged for four years then topped up with local raspberries, and the second was aged for three years then refermented with Franschhoek Shiraz for a year. The result is a bright, Berry and fruit flavour, layered on top of a funky barnyard, tart character.

This technique of aged wild, sour beer with fruit is a Belgian brewing tradition that we’ve adopted using local ingredients. The fruit sweetness compliments the tartness and complexity perfectly. Read Less

To celebrate our anniversary we gathered our favorite IPA brewers in South Africa create a super-collaboration! This Triple IPA pushes the limit on how much hops you can put in a beer. It is one of the biggest, hoppiest IPAs ever brewed in South Africa.

To brew this we employed some of the latest hop technologies and loaded hops in every stage of the process: mash tun, lauter, kettle and whirlpool then a completely packed out hopback. Afterwards we followed with an elaborate aging period and continuous four-step dry hopping schedule. The hop profile combines new-school whirlpool and dry hop methods with old-school multistage bitterness for a powerful hop intensity.

This is one of the hoppiest beer we've ever encountered. It goes beyond a level of hoppiness than anything we've ever brewed before. The aging time, mountains of hops and technical difficulty all make this beer cost a fortune. The result makes it all worthwhile. Celebrate the craft beer community and enjoy this hop bomb!

As you take the first sip, you dive into an ocean of candy-peach, citrus-orange flavors that saturates the senses. Meanwhile, the aroma is soaks you with a juicy, coating burst of hop nectar. The orangesicle rind flavors have a dark side of dank, resiny pine that transitions into a brisk, bright hop bitterness. A balance is created from the intense hop flavor and big malt backbone, hiding any booziness. The hop oils blend perfectly with the malt and alcohol warmth, creating a mouthwatering body and a mouthfeel that reminds you of honey. This is an intensely powerful, fresh hop elixir that presents itself surprisingly clean, round and approachable. Against the odds it finds balance & harmony that ascends the intense hop flavor.

Bourbon Wood is historical Old Ale, a blended barrel-aged beer with rich bourbon, dark fruit and subtle oak flavour notes. A rich body, slightly tart mouthfeel and smooth finish makes this an amazing after dinner beer.

Old Ales are a traditional English beer sometimes called stock ales, that traces its origins to before the use of hops, sometimes called "strong" or "keeping" ales. These were strong, malty beers that were left to mature in barrels, which smoothed out the flavours and provided a long secondary fermentation with wild yeast.

Centuries ago a secondary fermentation with the wild yeast "brettanomyces" was a hallmark of fine British beers. As they aged Old Ales developed a smooth, rich character similar to port wine. Our version is blend of 4,3 and 2 year old barrels, include a bourbon barrel aged beer which adds winter spice notes to the rich malt flavours and tart finish. Read Less

Spontaneously fermented Ale of Origin. After brewing an old world turbid mash of local grains, the wort was boiled for three hours with aged hops, then cooled overnight in our "coolship" - a converted wine vat in
our century old cellar. The open air inoculated the beer with wild yeast and bacteria from our surrounding fruit farms and brewery rafters. It then undergoes a long, complex fermentation and three year aging period in large oak barrels. This method of brewing is inspired by authentic Belgian Lambic, one of the most traditional beers in the world. The latest edition of our flagship wild ale, this is a cuvee of multiple vintages aged between one and six years.  This beer showcases the dynamic flavour and evolution of our mixed yeast culture.  The older parts of the blend show an intense brett spicy and funk character, enhanced by a fruity tartness, and peach, honey and lemon notes of more recent vintages.  This blend is the pinnacle of our barrel aging program.

The beer was fermented in a large French oak barrel, with the native Live Culture yeast blend that live in the wood. A long aging period followed, during which the wild yeast slowly continued to work, contributing the dry, funky, peppery, light fruit notes the Live Culture is known for. After aging it was blended with fresh citrus fynbos and hops. It reminds us of aged, dry champagne. The beer is thoroughly imprinted with our environment. The process of growing the grain, in the brewery, fermenting the beer with our native wild yeast, and aging it with our homegrown fynbos gives a unique sense of place.

Live Culture was awarded the Best Beer in Africa at the 2022 African Beer Cup and is one of the only beers to medal each year. Read Less
