Multi award winning Stonecutter Scotch Ale is the big, hearty, ‘red wine’ of our range. The Scotch Ale style is believed to have originated in Edinburgh in the 18th century and is colloquially known as "wee heavy" due to its higher strength than its paler siblings.

We use nine malts blended together to produce layers of caramel, toffee, liquorice, chocolate and roasty flavours. These layers are balanced by a tart, raisiny fruitiness that gradually gives way to give this dark beer a lingering dry finish. Read Less

As a producer of English Ales we like to keep our ear to the ground, and apparently there is a new fangled method of serving beer. The "Handpump" has been in existence for a couple of years in the UK – but we decided to wait until they perfected the technology before rushing off on a whim and producing a beer for this method of serving. Now, with the Brits having perfected the technology, we would like to introduce you to our first beer designed specifically for the handpump.

Originally the beer of choice for workers in London’s produce markets, the beer was a mixture of the previous nights slops that the "porters" would drink when they clocked off at dawn. Porter is also Andy's all time favourite beer style. Marlborough Pale Ale, or M.P.A. for short, is a uniquely kiwi take on an American Double India Pale Ale and is the biggest beer in our range. It is also the most philanthropic as it contributes significantly to the national economies where it is sold due to its generous donations to the excise tax man!

The style is based on the Americans intention to create a massively hopped full-bodied, higher alcohol Pale Ale to showcase the bitterness flavour and aroma of their locally grown hops.

Rather than simply copying the Americans, Renaissance Brewing has taken the concept and turned it into a kiwi brew by utilising not only New Zealand grown hops but also by choosing to use only New Zealand hop varieties. Read Less

For years fans of the Renaissance beers had been asking, “when are you guys going to do a Stout?” It was eventually decided that the effort Brian was putting into taking these pesky blighters out the back to give them a shoeing could be better used to actually make the aforementioned stout.

So we produced not only a Stout, but a Chocolate Oatmeal Stout, the Craftsman.

Craftsman is the ‘Big Brother’ to our popular Elemental porter. Building on the flavours given by the crystal, brown and black malts, we add a portion of organic rolled oats for a silky smooth mouthfeel, then added a small amount of cocoa nibs to the mash and brew kettle, plus a large addition of nibs to the fermentor. Abundance is a Baltic Porter brewed with cherries.

Full bodied and smooth with rich malty flavours that blend harmoniously with the cherry notes. Roast coffee and subtle hops on the nose, lush mellow malt with a light bitterness on the palate finishes with a hint cherry sweet and sour.

This beer was brewed the first time for Christmas 2013. It became our most successful beer ever launched when it emptied from our warehouse within 3 hours of it being available to our New Zealand customers, we even became aware of black market bartering occurring for it between our distributors!

It is a complex beer that would go well with numerous holiday delights such as:

A revamp of our original Paradox - which was a Blonde Ale - we have made some tweaks to the yeast of fermentation to bring you the new, improved, Paradox Pilsner.

Although the Pilsner is not the most cerebral of our beers it is one of our most popular efforts as it combines craft brewing philosophy with easy drinking acumen.

As soon as you flip the top off the bottle you know you’re in for something special. While the bright golden hue hints at a great quaffing beer, the explosion of passionfruit and citrus aromas - the signature of the Riwaka hop variety - leave you in no doubt you’re in for more than mere refreshment. On the palate the initial biscuity malt sweetness is soon joined by those zingy tropical fruit hop notes and leads into a racy tart finish. Read Less

Black the RIPA is a Black Rye India Pale Ale style ale. We brew it using a goodly amount of Canterbury pale ale malt as a base to which we add a blend of speciality barley malts. We then ‘Rye it up’ with malted Rye and a selection of exotic Rye speciality malts to yield a beer with great depth, body, and subtle unique flavours. To ‘Blacken’ it we incorporate a special chocolate malt, which is de-husked so it imparts the dark hue without any of the associated burnt and acrid notes of a stout or porter.
Next, for the IPA part, we use a generous amount of New Zealand grown hops- both Kiwi and American varieties - throughout the boil and in the hopback. To finish it, and add the last blast of flavour and aroma, we dry hop in the fermenter with another generous blend of Kiwi hops.
The result, a dark, flavoursome IPA full of fruit, flower, and citrus with just a hint of earthy spice. Read Less

This beer is a take on the New World Pale Ale. Four malts produce the beer’s rich amber hue and biscuity, malt flavours, while our London ale yeast contributes its own tart, berry-like signature. This underlying palate then balances the rich complex blend of hops [including ever-changing Orbit (Orphan Hop Research Blend)] which yield a symphony of resiny kiwi hop flavours of citrus, ripe stone-fruit and passionfruit which dominate the beers lingering finish.

Barley Wine 2013 + 2011 release years. Tribute is a new beer made in an old style. The Barley Wines of old date back to the days of yore when a special ‘heavy ‘ale was needed for the times when a common beer would not do.

Tribute is brewed by hand using an Elizabethan ‘DoubleWort Mashing’ process that yields very high gravity wort. In this process the mashing and sparging process that yields a normal beer is repeated a second time. The second mash and sparge is done using the wort collected from the first mash instead of water.

This concentrated wort is boiled with New Zealand hop varieties and given a long warm fermentation with a traditional London Ale Yeast, which precedes a long cold conditioning period to let the flavours harmonise. The result is a mellow, warming ale with layers of biscuit, roasted hazelnut and maple syrup, with hints of black current and toast. Read Less

Little RIPA was produced due to a demand by our shareholders for a 'sessionable' red ale (it seems they want to have two glasses of beer sometimes...). So our band of merry brewers got together to design something red, yummy, and with a reasonable ABV. We gave it a malt forward flavour using a blend of NZ specialty malts to yield chewy toffee notes with a hint of roastyness. Next comes the full on earthy fruity hop flavours with spicy undertones, which we achieve by late hopping with a melange of kiwi hops.
