Andrew Ritter was one of the founding brewers at Linden Street and his incredible legacy lives on today at Oakland United Beerworks. He loved: family, friends, brewing beer, and rugby. He would laugh deeply and toast, "Drink beer, slay dragon!" When he died at age 31 from ALS, we lost a dear son, brother, friend, and colleague.

Consequently, they became a conduit of new information and ideas from the wider world to their communities. Under the leadership of A. Philip Randolph, PUllman porters formed the first all-black union, the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters in 1925. They established their West Coast headquarters here in Oakland. Formation of the union was instrumental in the advancement of the Civil Rights Movement.

In the 1800s, carriage makers did a brisk business in Oakland and the wheelwrights usually doubled as blacksmiths in order to create the iron rims for the carriage wheels. Neighborhood names, such as Funktown and Jingletown, have their origins rooted in the history of those regions and drawn from the experiences of those who historically lived and worked there.
