This beer is a huge barleywine which was aged for two months in a Rogue whiskey barrel then matured for a year before its release. Aromas of stone fruit, dark cherries, toffee, honey, and vanilla oakiness. Flavors of caramel, oak, and roasted malt, with a noticeable hop presence, it is a little sweet and warms up nicely. A dark amber color and soft white head reminiscent of of a hazy fall sunset. Drink with caution and don't try to stand up quickly afterwards. Read Less

Brewed on 2/2/2015 this beer was the result of the annual dart throw to determine the style of Belgian beer the brewer would make for the Portland Cheers to Belgian Beers celebration on 5/8/2015. A full-on group effort with Alex Graham throwing the dart for our favorite style pick: Dark and Strong. Alex handed off to Warren Johnson who thought up this incredible recipe using Pilsner malt supplemented with Palm Sugar, Special B, and Carafa III then topped it off by propagating 2L of the chosen yeast for the beer: Belgian Abby II. Rich Hawthorne brewed the beer and the result was fermented until dry and then aged in an oak whiskey barrel producing the Dart Throw Belgian Dark Strong. Read Less

Rauchbier, or smoked beer, is a challenging style as the amount of smoke flavor in the beer is difficult to get right. Bamberg, Germany is famous for Rauchbier and for this bier we used malt from the famous Weyermann malting company of Bamberg. Using all German malt, which is distinguished by the rich, sweet, bready flavor of the malt, we added Beachwood smoked malt for nearly half of the grain bill to produce this smoked Octoberfest beer.

Aromas of smoke greet you as you raise your glass and the flavor is clear from the first sip through the last swallow. Judicious use of German Haullertauer hops adds just enough bitterness to counter the sweetness of the malt and enhance the long lasting smoked malt finish. This is a smooth, malt forward beer with an underlying smoked malt flavor that melds wonderfully with the continental malt and noble hops. Read Less

Two unique yeast strains were blended to produce this beer. Kӧlsch yeast is an ALE strain that ferments best at cooler “lager” temperatures, where California Common yeast is a LAGER strain that performs well closer to typical “ale” fermentation temperatures.
