Lager/Kolsch/Pilsner (5 Items)

Lager is a type of beer conditioned at low temperatures. The term may also be used as a verb to describe the cold-conditioning process. Lagers can be pale, amber, or dark. Kölsch is a style of beer first brewed in Cologne, Germany. It is unusual because although it is warm fermented with ale yeast, it is then conditioned at cold temperatures like a lager. Pilsner (also pilsener or simply pils) is a type of pale lager. It takes its name from the Bohemian city of Pilsen, where it was first produced in 1842. The world’s first blond lager, the original Pilsner Urquell, is still produced there today.

Pale Ale/IPA (5 Items)

Pale ale is an ale made with predominantly pale malt. The highest proportion of pale malts results in a lighter colour. Different brewing practices and hop levels have resulted in a range of taste and strength within the pale ale family. India pale ale (IPA) is a hoppy beer style within the broader category of pale ale. The term "pale ale" originally denoted an ale brewed from pale malt. Among the first brewers known to export beer to India was George Hodgson's Bow Brewery, on the Middlesex-Essex border. Bow Brewery beers became popular among East India Company traders in the late 18th century because of the brewery's location near the East India Docks. Demand for the export style of pale ale, which had become known as India pale ale,

Porters/Stouts (3 Items)

Stout is a dark beer. There are a number of variations including Baltic porter, milk stout, and imperial stout; the most common variation is dry stout. Stout is a top-fermented beer. Porter is sweeter than stout, but whether a porter is sweet, or spicy and bitter, by itself depends on how dark its grain is and the malt and hops used. Generally, porter does not use roasted barley, but some may; when it does, it usually uses lighter-colored barley. Due to the use of roasted, darker barley, stout has deeper roasted notes than porter and often has a dry, bitter taste.
