12 years old… unfortunately this bottle was completely still, with mild sherry-like oxidation.
Andrew: When I ask local meaderies if they would do a buckwheat mead or blend they always get skittish. I'm curious to know how the farmyard notes have evolved with that much time on it.
Derek Hyde: Applewood Farm Winery did a sweet buckwheat mead almost 20 yrs ago. It was unreal and inspired this braggot.
Derek Hyde: Maybe slight earthiness, but more of a bitter, dark caramel & molasses flav. More intense than Manuka, but different. It has mellowed

Good, but not nearly as good as last year. I’d guess that more (and lower AA) hops were used and more bitterness is coming thru from the beta acids.

A solid DUNKLES Bock (not a doppelbock as entered). It really is more of a scaled up dunkle than a Doppel. Tons of melanoidin character… dark rye bread crust, liquorice, red berry candy, dark caramel bitterness. Prost!

21,22,23 vertical. The 22 had more hop particulate (a bit of a haze) that never dropped out. It actually foamed at the mouth when I opened the can. While it doesn’t have the fresh nose & bite of this years, it is still remarkably good. No oxidation.
