Pilsner is a type of pale lager. It takes its name from the Bohemian city of Pilsen, where it was first produced in 1842. The world’s first blond lager, the original Pilsner Urquell, is still produced there today.
Kölsch is a style of beer first brewed in Cologne, Germany. It is unusual because although it is warm fermented with ale yeast, it is then conditioned at cold temperatures like a lager. This hybridized brewing process is similar to some other central northern European beers such as Düsseldorf's altbier.
