Founders Brewing Co. by Underground Mountain Brown

J.D. is drinking an Underground Mountain Brown by Founders Brewing Co. at Las Trampas Peak

After-theater wind-down. More “Oz, the Great and Terrible!” than “Dorothy, the Small and Meek”.

Lead Dog Brewing by Peanut Butter Chocolate Stout

Revisiting after Epidemic’s ‘Nutty But Nice’ earlier this evening. Didn’t let it warm up enough first. This isn’t nearly as good cold.

Allagash Brewing Company by Barrel & Bean

J.D. is drinking a Barrel & Bean by Allagash Brewing Company at Las Trampas Peak

Caramel sweetness, biscuity nose & entry, Belgian yeast without Belgian funk, buttery mouthfeel. Then, suddenly, the brain says, “Wait, is that ... COFFEE?” & it sneaks in progressively, subtly, until it finishes like a faint final note from mud pie. Fun.

Brasserie St-Feuillien by Grand Cru

J.D. is drinking a Grand Cru by Brasserie St-Feuillien at Las Trampas Peak

Delicious; on the “regular beer scale” it’d be a four. But, on the “Belgian ale scale”, this blonde is a three for me, because it’d rarely be the one for which I reach first. Sweet front, great breadiness, but a little too much finish-funk for balance.

This thinks it’s a margarita. Add a splash of an orange-hazy like a Grand Marnier float and it’d be good to go.

Avery Brewing Co. by Vanilla Bean Stout (2017)

J.D. is drinking a Vanilla Bean Stout (2017) by Avery Brewing Co. at Las Trampas Peak

Bit of wood, dollop of nice vanilla, goodly pile of sweetness, and heavy strumming of bourbon. Cocoa and coffee briefly play meerkat during the finish, but this is mostly about molasses and hooch. Would be at home on a 19th Century alpine St. Bernard.

Founders Brewing Co. by Backwoods Bastard

J.D. is drinking a Backwoods Bastard by Founders Brewing Co. at Las Trampas Peak

Dramatic improvement over standard ‘Dirty Bastard’. Tracks much more closely to proper Scotch Ale; in particular, doesn’t overwhelm with incongruous DIPA-style hopping. Bourbon heat is excessive, and flavors are pronounced more than harmonious. But tasty.

Uncommon Brewers by The Whiskey Thief

J.D. is drinking The Whiskey Thief by Uncommon Brewers at Las Trampas Peak

Lovely. Superior across the board to Scotch ale I just had. Whispy smoke (think Orkney, not Islay). Slight vegetal quality (heather). Heavy, but not hot (at 9.2% ABV). Strength & smoke build gradually. Sweet entry (candy sugar). Sneaky peat bite. Warming.

Founders Brewing Co. by Dirty Bastard

Haven’t had this in a few years. MUCH more hop-heavy than I recall, to its detriment for the style. Seven malts? Maybe, but nuance is lost, as is even the alleged smoke or peat. I like Scotch ales, I like Founders, and I remember liking this. But, a miss.

Brouwerij Het Anker by Gouden Carolus Christmas / Noël

J.D. is drinking a Gouden Carolus Christmas / Noël by Brouwerij Het Anker at Las Trampas Peak

Retaliatory Noël-strike Gregward! Strong ale flavor-wise, but with little perceived heat despite 10.5% ABV. Red forest berries in abundance on biscuity back, with the various hops playing as herbal notes rather than bittering agents. Festively delicious!

Einstök Ölgerð by Icelandic Winter Ale

J.D. is drinking an Icelandic Winter Ale by Einstök Ölgerð at Las Trampas Peak

“Einn jólabjór; takk!” Tomorrow begins Advent, so The Season is upon us. It’s time for Belgiany (but Icelandic!) malty brew with caramel and hints of evergreen needles and smoke. May our hearts be filled with joy, and our bellies be filled with Xmas beer!

Revisiting, but this time didn’t care for it. Maybe one of those things that’s much better on draught. Revisit.

Founders Brewing Co. by Double Trouble

J.D. is drinking a Double Trouble by Founders Brewing Co. at Las Trampas Peak

Weirdly, tastes milder than the ‘Electric Tower IPA’ I just had (despite being much higher ABV%) and less rounded in its flavors. More buttery, though. It’s fine, but the lighter-side of beers definitely aren’t Founders’ strong-suit.

Santa Clara Valley Brewing by Electric Tower IPA

J.D. is drinking an Electric Tower IPA by Santa Clara Valley Brewing at Las Trampas Peak

Full-throttle hops-in-your-face West Coaster. But, layers to the underlying whispers of fruit, and even the grass and pine threads aren’t unilateral. Bittering strong but not offensive. Well-made.

Anderson Valley Brewing Company by Hibiscus Roselle Ale

J.D. is drinking a Hibiscus Roselle Ale by Anderson Valley Brewing Company at Las Trampas Peak

Intensely floral in both nose and palate, with hibiscus in evidence from start. Sweeter than expected at first, but progressively drying throughout. Rising, lasting grassy bitterness and bog-berry tartness dominate finish. Probably better with food.

Lead Dog Brewing by 2019 Oktoberfest!

J.D. is drinking a 2019 Oktoberfest! by Lead Dog Brewing at Las Trampas Peak

Richly sweet. Heavy on the caramel-roasted malt end of the spectrum. Not much spice, relatively few “wheatish” markers, and dry scone more than soft loaf bread. Marking three as a very drinkable and tasty no-hop amber; it’s not strictly on style fest-wise

High Water Brewing by Campfire Stout

J.D. is drinking a Campfire Stout by High Water Brewing at Las Trampas Peak

Noticeable graham cracker on nose, but much too thin for targeted taste profile. S’mores smell & (relative) taste set up expectation of marshmallow-based creamy mouthfeel, and this isn’t even close. Needs more body, and maybe some lactose addition.

Can

Prairie Artisan Ales by Pirate Noir

J.D. is drinking a Pirate Noir by Prairie Artisan Ales at Las Trampas Peak

Dark cocoa on nose, with slight hint of raspberry. Burst of rum-related heat on entry; more cocoa; overriding sweetness (but not Hershey-like; rum-sugar in distinct parallel with cacao nibs). Warming, ABV settles down, but lurks. No coffee notes at all.
