Similar to the “Get a little help from my Sends” beer from last night. Got a little bit of spiciness at the end. This was good. Visited another cool tap house tonight. This time in Hollister.

Kill the Sun by Ex Novo Brewing

Barrel-aged? Chocolate? Chilis? Vanilla? Spices? Lactose? Nearly 12% ABV, sans corresponding burn? Where do I sign? Great balance. A place for everything, & everything in its place. Basically a mildly boozy Mexican hot cocoa, except in name. So much yes.

Menace To Sobriety by Morgan Territory Brewing

J.D. is drinking a Menace To Sobriety by Morgan Territory Brewing at City of Hollister

Huge IBUs (nearly 300!), but front end is largely lost in a lingering flash of ABV-heat which, while not absurd at 10.5%, is much less wrangled than many of its competitors. As a result, most hop character is muffled until sustained bitter finish hits.

Dirty by Altamont Beer Works

J.D. is drinking a Dirty by Altamont Beer Works at City of Hollister

Turns out to drink like an IPA with some Brown and a few coffee grounds dumped in, rather than a hopped Brown Ale. Nothing wrong with that, but not what I had in mind when I reached for it. Merits a revisit.

Solid bitter. Stellar can art. Suffers in the wake of several better dark beers. Happy to have it, it just doesn’t rise above today’s crowd.

What Rough Beast by Breakside Brewery

J.D. is drinking a What Rough Beast by Breakside Brewery at City of Hollister

Nice East/West compromise beer. Mostly PNW-style hops but with a NEIPA-style mouthfeel and bit of a tropical flash down the home stretch. Tastes almost like a fresh-hop despite this can having rolled out in November (~4mos ago). Better than expected.

13.1% ABV? It sure doesn’t show. Tastes like bitter dark-roast coffee with a middling dollop of vanilla cake-frosting dropped in for sweetener & body. If you substituted this for someone’s Peet’s, they might not notice until it was too late.

The Real DDH by Humble Sea Brewing Company

J.D. is drinking The Real DDH by Humble Sea Brewing Company at City of Hollister

NOT Helles lager. It IS, however, very flexible & tasty beer, with a Belgiany main event (bread, malt, associated spice) interlaced with swirling hop-flashes (interest & body). Scratches a number of different itches without wholly committing to any type.

Symphony by Laughing Monk Brewing

Caramelly malt for days. Slight roast, bready flashes, nary a hop to be found. Slight alkaline quality builds up as the can goes down; the first sip was a solid four but I’m marking it a three on balance. But, crushable and would be great with food.

Disco Stu Likes Disco Mosaic by Fieldwork® Brewing Company

J.D. is drinking a Disco Stu Likes Disco Mosaic by Fieldwork® Brewing Company at City of Hollister

The Simpsons’ pun is a solid four; the beer doesn’t measure up. To be fair, I’ve been burned out on Mosaic lately, & it’s well constructed with a great pillowy mouthfeel, so I’m sure I’m the problem. But, reviews are idiosyncratic, & today it’s a three.

Protracted Period of Uncertainty by Alvarado Street Brewery

J.D. is drinking a Protracted Period of Uncertainty by Alvarado Street Brewery at City of Hollister

Delish. Continuing dark Euro-lager rampage (1st Norway, then Czech, now Franconian). Very similar profile overall to the Heater Allen I just finished, heavy roast & malt, but with a slight lifting yeasty hop-kick at end. Digging it. Solid NC/CA collab.

Espresso malt & crushable roast. No hop bite nor hop aroma. I really don’t like the Czech Pilsners, but the Czech-style lager is great stuff. On the 3/4 line, rounding up because I’m squarely in the mood for it.
