Lee W: I don’t recall shaking this up at all, but boy did this bottle spew forth when opened 😰

First thoughts: this was quite a treat. A bit hot, warming spices on the nose. The palate is a wonderful balance of moderate caramelly sweetness, dark raisiny fruit, and a touch of black tea-like bitterness.
Purchased at Garrison Wine & Liquor Merchants
Lee W is drinking an Entropy Series No. 32 Pirate's Solace by Dageraad Brewing at Brentwood Bay
Super warming spice forward on the nose: cinnamon, cardamom, nutmeg, etc. The palate was like a spiced Christmas fruitcake, with dried fruit raisiny sweetness, brown sugar, plenty more spice, and a slight banana bready note. Could use more barrel impact?

Lee W is drinking a Barrel-aged Wild Orchard Ale by Field House Brewing Co. at Brentwood Bay
First thoughts: bright, acidic apples and underripe banana Brett funk on the nose. The palate brought a great cider-beer hybrid character, with tons of orchard-fresh funky fruit notes, moderate tartness, and a cloudy appearance belying its dry nature

Unlike anything I’ve had before! Roasty chocolate on the nose at first, joined by robust meaty smoke and herbal, oceanic seaweed. The palate is quite light but nicely malty and easy-drinking, slightly briny, vegetal, and chocolatey. Bitter enough finish.

The nose was floral for sure but giving funky sweet-and-sour pork as well – definitely vinegary. The palate is bracingly tart, with more floral hibiscus, rose, and slightly sweet berries. Almost more of a shrub character than a sour ale. A weird one!

Demerara sugar, vanilla, sweet coffee, and malt whiskey on the nose. The palate has a rich, boozy body, though still balanced and not syrupy by any means. Sweetness is balanced too, with notes of creamy chocolate and bourbon interlaced with oak tannins.
Purchased at Vessel Liquor
Lee W: Very torn between 4.25 and 4.5 on this one. It works really well for what it is, but it’s missing the X-factor that usually kicks beers up to that level for me. I’ll give it the benefit of the doubt because I had a big dinner…
