FlandersNed : Most people rate for their own personal preferences, instead of for style, making their ratings irrelevant to most other people since few people have (or know) others palates and style preferences… I try to rate for style.

M T: Of course people rate to their personal preference. That’s why nobody should pay attention to the ratings of someone they don’t know. Rating by style, bud light becomes a 5 cap. Would anybody sane rate BL 5 caps? Rate however you want people. Have fun!

Gavin Fury: I unnastand how people be ratin’. I just think people should prefer Czech pils more. Between preference and style I go with whatever’s higher. All equal here. The true system is rating a beer based on how much you’d like to drink it with Norm Macdonald.

Gavin Fury: Like if an IPA sucks at being an IPA but I like it I’m going to give it that rating, but on the other hand I’m not going to be the guy who hates strawberry and lemon giving Naturdays 2 caps. Fun is key.

FlandersNed : M T. Where does BL “rate 5 cap”? In BJCP style categories is BL a gold medal winner its own category?. In addition, I’d bet money that most people don’t ‘know’ most of their UT friends’ palates. My point stands…

M T: With BL being the quintessential light beer, of course it is a 5 cap rated by style. Actually that should be miller lite as the original light beer, but the two are interchangable. My point was rate by whatever metric you want. Didn’t counter your point.

FlandersNed : “Quintessential” & “original” don’t mean (or deliver) quality; by that standard, the first beers in existence (which were likely garbage by today’s standards) would justify to justify a 5 cap rating. That’s part of my point—random reasons/rationales…

FlandersNed : …and personal preferences make ratings relatively meaningless to others & bastardize global averages. i.e., look at the avg. ratings for most light lagers vs ‘big’ & BA beers — it doesn’t mean lighter beers suck!
