Season 3, Episode 17

Ep. 17: Is There a Hop Store?

Wed, August 12th 2020 | 01:10:49
Episode Summary

Today is all about getting ingredients from the last 4 episodes, and what a brewer (Home or Pro) might go through to find the right grain, hops, and yeast (and water) to make beer. From there we cover the difficulty you may encounter with an Adjunct heavy beer as well. We do this all while enjoying the "East Coast Pliny" that is Maine's Lunch, and a Huge Collaboration with 10+ Breweries lead by Gizmo in NC! Black is Beautiful, and this version of it is also full of coffee! Plus! let us know what you think of the slight change in pacing for our first beer in the show! We had a lot of fun with this one. 🍻

Episode Notes

What We’re Drinking:

Lunch by Maine Beer Company

  • ABV: 7%
  • IBU: N/A
  • Notes: Our “East Coast” version of a West Coast-style IPA. Intense hop flavors and aromas of tropical and citrus fruits and pine dominate. A subtle malt sweetness brings the beer into balance.

Black Is Beautiful by Gizmo Brew Works

  • ABV: 10%
  • IBU: N/A
  • Collaborators: Top of the Hill Restaurant and Brewery, Fullsteam, Carolina Brewing Company (Holly Springs, NC), Raleigh Brewing Company, Lynnwood Grill & Brewing Concern, Neuse River Brewing Company, Compass Rose Brewery, Clouds Brewing, Jordan Lake Brewing Company, Tobacco Road Brewing
  • Notes: (From Gizmo) We at Gizmo Brew Works are proud to announce that we have joined an initiative created by Weathered Souls Brewing Company (WSBC) to raise awareness for the injustices people of color face daily and raise funds for police brutality reform and legal defenses for those who have been wronged. We have spearheaded this initiative by leading a team of ten other local breweries, Crosby Hops, and LD Carlson to brew Black Is Beautiful. Black Is Beautiful is a 10% Imperial Stout that was designed by WSBC to be a moderately high abv. stout to showcase the different shades of black. Not only will we be donating 100% of proceeds to the ACLU of NC, but we are also making the commitment to the long-term work of equality. Highest praises to everyone over at WSBC, out of Texas, for inspiring us and taking the lead.
