India Pale Ales were originally brewed strong to withstand the long voyage to India. Today, breweries concoct IPAs hoppy enough to make the trip back. Vortex IPA is Fort George’s contribution to the IPA arms race. Brewed with generous additions of Comet, Chinook, and Simcoe hops throughout the brewing, fermentation, and conditioning phases, and balanced with heaps of pale malt. We designed Vortex IPA not to rip the taste buds off of your tongue, but rather vigorously stimulate your palate with lupulin ecstasy.

Appearance: Bright, goldish with off-white foam

Aroma: Pine needles, citrus, melon, resin with light malty notes

Taste: Upfront bitterness balanced with a moderate malty sweetness

Brewer's Notes:

Vortex IPA is named in reverence to the tornado that nearly scattered our Sweet Virginia brew system (the original pub system) among the cornfields of Nebraska, while en route from Virginia Beach to Astoria. To this day, Sweet Virginia remains a workhorse in the public house and we continue brewing Vortex IPA as our flagship beer.

We both share a passion for fruity, aromatic ipa's, but we make them Quite often. This IPA distinguishes itself with a biscuitty English Malt called Maris Otter to give a stronger Malt character than most modern ipas, while still packing a big tropical, peachy, citrusy hop profile. As fruity as this beer is, it still has a rather dry finish with a mild bitterness to round it out and prevent it from being overly sweet. Named for the knife made from the tooth of the sandworms in the Dune novels. Flavor: Very light, slightly sweet, barely bitter, so crisp, cool and clean.

Every year, right around the beginning of May, Fort George goes out to the forest to pick spruce.

People have been making stuff out of spruce tips on this continent for hundreds of years. In the 16th Century, First Nations people taught sailors from Europe how to brew a tea from cedar that contained enough vitamin C to prevent them from dying of scurvy. Easy to make, likely to keep sailors alive and also alcohol. Win, win, win.

We don’t make Spruce Budd every year because we’re otherwise in danger of dying of scurvy. We just make it because it’s tasty.

Spruce Budd is comprised of pilsner malt, water and hundreds of pounds of hand-harvested spruce tips.

No hops, just the piney, fresh, forest-y sweetness of springtime in the PNW. Read Less

It’s the mother of Matryoshka, the stout to start all Matryoshka stouts. Wrap yourself in this rich Russian Imperial embrace, from Fort George to you, From Astoria With Love.

From Astoria With Love will be available in the seasonal 16-ounce can lineup starting in February 2018. Look for four-packs and draft around the Pacific Northwest.

The barrel aged version, Matryoshka, is typically released in late December or early January, with layers of variations following soon after.

We have friends in Reykjavik, Iceland. They’re the folks at Kex. Everything that Kex touches - delicious modern Icelandic cuisine, the hotel business, an old biscuit factory, or indeed this beer - turns to gold.

Reykjavik and Astoria might be separated by centuries of history and about as much of the globe as you can go around without beginning to come back around the other side, but the hearts of our two cities are knit close by the spirit of our respective lands: inhospitable wilderness, warm hearths, commercial fishing and really good food.

We made Atomic Jukebox to celebrate what we have in common and ended up pretty close to our collective childhood dreams of a giant glass of “breakfast orange juice drink.” Turns out we have that in common, too.

popped out of our heads fully-formed like the goddess

and tasted them like normal people.

A Munich Helles Lager is the epitome of balance and nuance. Noticeable malt character, but not too malty. Noticeable hop character, but not too hoppy. The key is using quality ingredients and a meticulous process. Fort George brewed with German malts to get the proper regional flavor profile and Hallertauer Mittlefruh hops for a delicate balance of floral and fruity. Fermentation was extra low and slow, creating a clean and crisp ester profile. And traditional spunding, where the tank is kept under pressure during fermentation, produced natural carbonation. The result is a sessionable, flavorful, crisp beer for your favorite outings. Read Less

We make Fields of Green when we feel like it and every batch is different. That way it’s always FRESH. But it’s never as FRESH as this year’s FRESH HOP Fields of Green. We managed to get our hand on enough Fresh Simcoe to sink a canoe or feed a full-grown Indian Elephant for 2 days or stuff 128 standard bed pillows. Rather than feed an elephant - we made beer. Beer is historically the best use of hops. But who knows what we’ll do next time. Those canoes won’t sink themselves.
