What's Globally Trending This Week
Here we are at the end of August, the warm summer months coming to an end. This week certainly was a long week on my end but I enjoyed a few great beers throughout the week during the Virtual Happy Hours with Alisa Bowens-Mercado & Andy Crouch. What was the community drinking this week? I pulled the top beers (sorted by unique user check-ins), from non-macro breweries (as defined by the Brewers Association) from this week to share with you! Without further ado - here's a countdown of the top 10 trending beers of the week:
10. Hazy Jane from BrewDog
5% ABV
N/A IBU
250,687 Ratings
The haze craze is real and people are loving this beer with a near 4-star rating. This beer was so popular that BrewDog made another lower strength version called Hazy O-G, which was another big hit!
9. Chuggernaut - Amundsen Bryggeri
4.7% ABV
40 IBU
38,433 Ratings
From 2016-2018, the Session IPA style was the highest trending style on Untappd surpassing regular IPAs. This beer is a collaboration between Devil's Peak Brewing Co. and Armusden Bryggeri. It's a juicy double dry-hopped, Session England Style IPA that claims it will "blow your mind with a total hop overload, tropical, juicy and hazy." The can artwork is really awesome too!

8. Hops For Hipsters - HaandBryggeriet
I love the name! This beer hails from HaandBryggeriet from Norway and is a New England Hazy IPA with American hops to give a more tropical aroma and flavor. Given its new-ish release last month, it's great to see it trending!

7. Rue B. Soho Grapefruit Lager - Ska Brewing
Our first American brewer on the list! This Hells Lager weighs in at 5% ABV with 15 IBU and is packed with grapefruit notes and cascade hops. Brewed by Ska Brewing out of Colorado, it has a distinct color and I'm sure it's extremely refreshing to hit in the summer months.

Great lagertaste with that bitter fresh grape aftertone. Excellent balance. Good job Ska Brewing.

Earned the For the Can badge!
6. La Chouffe Blond - Brasserie d'Achouffe
This gnome is iconic! Brewed by Brasserie d'Achouffe out of Belgium, this beer has a slightly hoppy taste, combining notes of fresh coriander and fruity tones and apparently "is the drink which gives them their zest for life." Last time I had this beer was back in 2013 when I was on a trip to the Netherlands!

Another BrewDog hit on the list! They are killing it recently! This American IPA has a bitter edge that will "push your citrus tolerance to the brink!". It's loaded with grapefruit and has a caramel malt base. It features Amarillo, Citra, Magnum, Mosaic, and Simcoe. Talk about a hop bomb!

4. Samuel Adams OctoberFest - Boston Beer Co
Fall is coming! This week, we saw a rush of check-ins to OctoberFest style beers. As we discussed on our Virtual Happy Hour with BeerEdge's Andy Crouch, some people enjoy this style of beer year-around!

Rich and robust malts play out so well here. Classic German flavors. I think people deliberately rate this beer lower because of its macro status. Delicious beer!

Earned the Middle of the Road (Level 7) badge!
Earned the Photogenic Brew (Level 11) badge!
3. Killer Pale - Stigbergets Bryggeri
A New England Pale Ale from Stigbergets Bryggeri in Gothenburg, Västra Götalands län Sweden, coming in at 5.5% ABV! Killer Pale and a killer whale, with a killer can design!

Mmm, så här ska en Pale smaka enligt mig! Hazard o extra humlig - saknas lite skumkrona bara av någon anledning
Earned the Haze for Days (Level 21) badge!
Earned the Swedish Brews (Level 40) badge!
2. Punk IPA - BrewDog
5.2% ABV
35 IBU
567,486 Ratings
Punk IPA has been globally trending on Untappd for quite some time and definitely seen a huge increase in unique users check-ins since May, I tweeted about it recently showing an increase of the beer across the world in terms of unique user check-ins.
1. Deadhead IPA Series: Extended Jam - DESTIHL Brewery
The number one spot got to DESTIHL out of Normal, IL (yes Normal). As listed on their Untappd page, the IPA series "melds the alluring vibe of our favorite music with unbounded takes on the hoppy beers we love to drink, unleashing a whole new groove". The Extended Jam features Pilsen malt, flaked oats, wheat, and an encore of Mosaic and El Dorado hops, awakening jammy aromas and flavors reminiscent of tropical & stone fruits. Delicious!
