Untappd 2020 Year in Review: Top Cities
Good riddance, 2020. This is the second post in our series of Untappd Year in Review for 2020. Check out the top beer styles of 2020 here!
Today, we're taking a look at the top 10 cities of 2020 based on the total number of check-ins globally. Let's dive in.
10. Helsinki, Finland 🇫🇮
First up on the list is Helsinki with around 363k check-ins in 2020. Finland is a growing area on Untappd and this is the first time it's made it in the top 10. In 2019, it came in 13th place for the top check-ins. In this city, the top beer that was checked-in was Karhu III by Sinebrychoff!

9. Utrecht, Netherlands 🇳🇱
Here comes Utrecht, known for its medieval center and tree-lined canals. It's also known for great beers as it boasted almost 400k check-ins in 2020. This city wasn't even on the map last year, literally, being outside the top 25! In this city, the top beer that was checked-in was Hazy Weekend by vandeStreek bier!

8. Philadelphia, PA, USA 🇺🇸
Our first U.S. city comes in at number 8! Philadelphia is a big beer town and great some for east coasters to snag some Russian River as the only place east of Colorado. COVID has been hard on the city, forcing a temporary closing of the famous beer bar, Monk's Cafe. It also has the oldest and largest beer week, Philly Beer Week, which was also canceled due to the pandemic. Given the struggle, it still ranked high on the list, although dropping from 6 in 2019. In this city, the top beer that was checked-in 2020 was Philthy by Yards Brewing Co.

7. Gothenburg, Sweden 🇸🇪
In the seventh spot, another new city joins the list: Gothenburg. This sea-side town packed serious check-ins with close to 480k check-ins happening in 2020. Similar to Utrecht, it wasn't even the top 25 for 2019. Given the pandemic, a lot of new cities are on this list. In this city, the top beer that was checked-in was I'll Sleep When I'm Dead by Beerium.

6. Amsterdam, Netherlands 🇳🇱
Amsterdam gains 2 spots this year, to place at number 6 with around 520k check-ins. The growth in users and check-ins in this city has been pretty rapid. In 2019, it was the 3rd highest non-US city for check-ins! It's risen higher in overall ranking but is now the 4th highest non-US city. Other countries are starting to figure it out! In this city, the top beer that was checked in 2020 was IJwit by Brouwerij 't IJ.

5. Oslo, Norway 🇳🇴
Now getting down to top 5! In the 5th spot is Oslo, the capital of Norway. Known for its green spaces and museums, it's also apparently known for its amazing beer scene with over 613k check-ins in 2020. It jumped 5 spots compared to 2019, and looks to grow even more in the coming year! In this city, the top beer that was checked-in 2020 was Juicy IPA by Frydenlund Bryggerier.

4. Stockholm, Sweden 🇸🇪
In 4th, we have Stockholm, the capital of Sweden. It actually encompasses 14 islands and more than 50 bridges on the Baltic Sea (a little trivia for you incase you get asked that someday). The beer scene is also thriving in Stockholm with 627k check-ins in 2020 and up 3 spots from 2019. In this city, the top beer that was checked in 2020 was Apocalyptic Thunder Juice by Amundsen Bryggeri.

3. Chicago, IL, USA 🇺🇸
Back to the U.S. we go with number 3, Chicago. Chicago is the second-largest market for Untappd when talking about U.S. cities. Last year, Chicago landed 4th on the list. Even with COVID-19, was able to increase 1 spot from 2019 to number 3 with close to 750k check-ins in 2020. Here's to more 2021! In this city, the top beer that was checked in 2020 was Son of Juice by Maplewood Brewing Company.

2. New York City, NY, USA 🇺🇸
Runner-up position, New York City takes the prize with over 900k check-in 2020. New York is the highest market for Untappd users in the U.S. Moving up from number 3 last year, New York has been hit hard from COVID-19, with a large number of bars and restaurants closed due to the pandemic. Many bar owners have built their own outdoor eating/drinking area to help boost sales, but with the cold weather coming, it's going to be interesting to see how that unfolds. In this city, the top beer that was checked in 2020 was Green City by Other Half Brewing Co.

1. London, England 🏴
At the top spot for the second year in a row, is London, England with over a 1.2m+ check-ins in 2020. London's craft beer scene is booming, to say the least, after topping the charts again. The festival scene in London typically provides a majority of the check-ins for the city, but with the pandemic, it has taken a hit. For example in 2019, we recorded over 1.7m+ check-ins due to the Great British Beer Festival and others, but with the absence of these festivals, we saw a major dip in check-ins. However, that didn't remove them from first place! Congrats to all the brits out there! In this city, the top beer that was checked in 2020 was Neck Oil by Beavertown.
