Untappd 2020 Year in Review: Top Breweries

To wrap everything up, we're taking a final look at the top 10 breweries of 2020 based on the total number of check-ins globally. Let's go!
10. Lagunitas Brewing Co 🇺🇸
Kicking us off, we have Lagunitas Brewing out of California with over 437k check-ins in 2020. Lagunitas didn't move in this list from 2019, but has seen lots of growth overseas due to them being part of Heineken for increased growth. In 2020, we saw over 845 different beers checked in from the brewery. That's a lot of different beers consumed!
9. Bell's Brewery 🇺🇸
At number 9, Bells' Brewery comes in from Kalmazoo, MI. Down from 7 last year, there we over 456k check-ins in 2020 for this midwest brewery. Top beers include Two Hearted Ale, and their newest edition, Light Hearted Ale aiming to capture some of the low-cal craze that took the world by storm this year. In 2020, we saw over 675 different beers checked in from the brewery.
8. Goose Island Beer Co. 🇺🇸
Chicago's own Goose Island Beer Co. takes the 8th spot this year, down 1 from 2019. A big part of Goose Island's check-in growth is their Bourbon County series that drives people to line up on Black Friday to get this year's releases. However, with COVID-19 shutting down many bars and breweries, they lost a little of their holiday push this year. In 2020, we saw over 789 different beers checked in from the brewery.

7. New Belgium Brewing Co 🇺🇸
Next up is New Belgium Brewing Co. which made a jump up from 11th in 2019 to 7th in 2020. Headquartered in Fort Collins, CO, with a brewery also in North Carolina, New Belgium increased its 2020 check-ins by offering direct-to-consumer opportunities via online shipping to certain states. In 2020, we saw over 680 different beers checked in from the brewery.

6. Stone Brewing Co. 🇺🇸
One of the largest breweries in the US, Stone sits at 6 in the line up for 2020. It's down by 1 from 2019, and could be attributed to COVID-19 and restrictions placed on its many restaurants in California, which typically are top venues for the breweries. In 2020, we saw over 1,209 different beers checked in from the brewery (yes, you read that right!)
5. Sierra Nevada Brewing Company 🇺🇸
At number of 5, we have Calfornia's own Sierra Nevada with over 606k check-ins in 2020. Down 1 from 2019, this brewery opened a brewery location in North Carolina to increase growth along the East Coast, and is riding the popular wave of Hazy Little Thing, the highest checked in New England IPA in 2020. In 2020, we saw over 1,039 different beers checked in from the brewery.

4. Founders Brewing Co. 🇺🇸
In the 4th spot, we have Founders Brewing Co. from Grand Rapid, MI with over 692k check-ins in 2020. Down 1 from 2019, Founders has produced more variants this year of it's popular Kentucky Breakfast Stout (KBS) but retired their Canadian Breakfast Stout (CBS) this year. Nevertheless, with its new brewery location in Detroit, they be able to keep in the top 10 for this year. In 2020, we saw over 989 different beers checked in from the brewery.

3. Other Half Brewing Co. 🇺🇸
At number 3, from Brooklyn, NY we have Other Half Brewing Co.! Up from 5 in 2019, this brewery is absolutely killing it in 2020. OHB has opened a brewery location in the Fingerlakes region (NY) and a brewery in Washington, DC, and started shipping beers direct-to-consumer via online ordering. They continue to produce great beer and the Untappd community keeps checking them in! In 2020, we saw over 1,303 different beers checked in from the brewery (the most for any brewery in the top 10)!

2. Tree House Brewing Co. 🇺🇸
Last years winner, Tree House from Massachusetts, comes in 2nd in 2020. Tree House temporarily closed their brewery due to COVID in April allowing to-go only. For a brewery that doesn't distribute, it's amazing to see it still at #2! With no taproom open, only to go order, the love for Tree House runs deep! We saw over 716 different beers checked in from the brewery!

1. BrewDog 🏴
Despite all that has happened in 2020, BrewDog has had an amazing year on Untappd. We've seen exponential growth for their classic offerings like Elvis Juice and Punk IPA, as well as success with their new online store offerings. Congrats to BrewDog and all the breweries the made the list this year! We saw over 463 different beers checked in from BrewDog (the lowest for any brewery in the top 10)!
