Portland, OR...what are you drinking?
I don't know about you guys but I am so ready to be able to travel again. It's truly all I think about while I'm stuck at home still too weirded out to go sit at a brewery or restaurant (but seriously, take that beer-clean glass standard to the nth degree if your area allows you to go out right now).
To keep myself sane, I've been building out my travel bucket list and using Untappd to pin down exactly what breweries I want to visit and what beers to try when it's safe to get back out there.
This past Thursday, Jeff Alworth, Founder & Editor of Beervana, joined Greg Avola for a Virtual Happy Hour to discuss the ins and outs of the beer scene in Portland, OR. Now, I've only been to the Pacific Northwest once, and naturally, it's taken a top spot on my travel bucket list so as you can imagine, he had my undivided attention...
Jeff came out swinging with TONS of suggestions for must-visit breweries in Portland, OR. that need to go on your list including Breakside Brewery, Wayfinder Beer, Upright Brewing Company, Great Notion Brewing, Ruse Brewing, and Little Beast Brewing.

To really round out my Portland, OR. bucket list, I wanted to pull beer and brewery suggestions straight from the Untappd community. I looked into what Portlanders are really drinking the most of out there via Untappd check-in stats. Looking over unique user check-ins in Portland, OR. over the month of July 2020, here are my findings:
Most checked-in beers by users in Portland, OR in July 2020.
Taking its name after a shooting star in Hawaiian, Hoku-lele Tiki-Inspired Tropical Ale was a beer that the brew team at Ecliptic has a lot of fun in developing the recipe. Hoku-lele Tiki-Inspired Tropical Ale uses Sabro, Azacca, and Mosaic hops that are dosed with the tropical essence of pineapple, passionfruit, guava, coconut, almond and macadamia nut, along with a dash of cinnamon. This tropical themed summer beer sits at 8% ABV and 16 IBUs.
Brewed in collaboration with Vitamin Sea Brewing in Massachusetts, this double IPA is swimming with Citra and Galaxy hops.
SunRay Juicy IPA is brewed with Bru-1 and Idaho 7 hops and 100% Pale Malt. Together these hops pack a punch of juicy flavor, with heavy notes of tropical fruit and citrus. SunRay Juicy IPA is an ideal brew to drink all summer long.
Tyler Brown is a legend in the beer industry, the godfather of modern IPA in the Northwest, and one of the best storytellers you'll ever meet. We've been lucky enough to soak up tons of knowledge from Tyler and his crew at Barley Brown's, and there's no doubt that Breakside IPA and Wanderlust exist the way they do today thanks to the influence of Tyler, Eli, Shawn, and Marks. It was a no-brainer to host them as part of our 10th anniversary collaborations and also a no-brainer to make a West Coast IPA with them. When we sat down to make this beer, we asked, 'how would we design a new West Coast IPA in 2020' that captures the direction that WC IPA is heading? The resulting beer is filled with three of the fruitiest hops around, Strata, Mosaic, and Azacca, along with a touch of Simcoe to anchor the beer in classic dank and catty West Coast flavor. The bitterness is modest, the malt bill is extremely lean, and the ABV is moderate. It's a contemporary West Coast IPA for the new decade.
You can't stop 3-Way IPA. You can only hope to contain it. Built on a structurally sound foundation of Pilsner malt, spelt, and flaked oats, and dry-hopped with ridiculous levels of Simcoe, Azacca, Citra, and Chinook hops, this juicy beast is coming to crush your summer. 3-Way IPA has enough tropical fruit flavors to satiate a giant lizard, playing on pleasant notes of melon & fresh orange peel, and a soft finishing touch, like a gorilla on the bongos.
I will say, it's interesting to me that the most checked-in beer by users in Portland, OR. is from Fort George Brewery in Astoria, OR. HOWEVER, "pleasant notes of melon & fresh orange peel, and a soft finishing touch, like a gorilla on the bongos"...yeah, okay totally understood why this beer would be crushed the most this summer. I'll need to get my hands on this. What I love the most about using Untappd when traveling is having the ability to locate these trending beers immediately. It's so simple. You open up the beer page on the app, tap "Find It", and Untappd will generate a list of all locations near you that have 3-Way IPA available. So you better believe that after a long day of exploring Portland, OR. I'm going to be relaxing up in my future beautiful Airbnb cracking open a 3-Way IPA to see what the craze is all about.
