NEW BADGE: World Cider Day (2024)

Cider is as old as the apple trees John Chapman (better known as Johnny Appleseed) tended to in America in the early nineteenth century. Actually, this fermented apple beverage has roots that go back even further. As the story goes, when the Romans invaded England around 55 BCE, they discovered Celts already enjoying cider.

Apple trees had already been introduced in Europe and Asia, but the English, French, and Spanish perfected the art of fermenting this ruby-fleshed fruit.

Today considered a favorite beverage in many countries, from Japan to America to Spain, cider can be enjoyed in alcoholic and non-alcoholic forms. In most countries, though, cider automatically means the boozy version. At the same time, in the United States, there is a specific distinction between cider (straight-up unfiltered apple juice) and "hard" cider (apple juice with an ABV).

From dry to juicy to herbed, spiced, and hopped to sweet and even rosé, hard cider runs the entire gamut of flavor and aroma.

And people love cider! Coinciding with the modern craft beer movement, cideries have exploded globally. In fact, last year alone, drinks in the "Cider - Traditional" category notched an incredible 2 million check-ins on the app.

However you drink your apples in a glass, celebrate this World Cider Day on June 3, 2024, with one of the globe's tastiest and most historical drinks.

And once you get your cider, the only thing left to do is check it in…

To earn Untappd's newest "World Cider Day 2024" badge, drink and check in any one (1) beverage with the style of Cider, including Non-Alcoholic Cider / Perry, between June 1 and 3, 2024.

Who knows, maybe a cider a day does keep the doctor away? Let's find out!
