Earn Three New Insider “Super Style” Badges

Responsive image

The one question we hear most on January 1: Is this the year of the lager?

Well, in their "9 Beer Trends to Watch in 2023," our friends at Hop Culture predicted this could be the year of the Czech lager.

Our Untappd data isn't pointing us in that direction just yet. But we are noticing that pilsners have become more popular.

In 2021, pilsners recorded just over one million check-ins!

And American lagers? They're not the lifeless, fizzy suds your dad drank.

American brewers have put their own spin on the style, often sourcing local ingredients to craft these deceivingly complex beers.

And while witbiers aren't lagers, they're just darn good Belgian wheat beers deserving of your attention as we head into spring.

So to kick off our first set of Insider "Super Style" Badges of the year, we're starting with styles we see on the up-and-up—pilsners, American lagers, and witbiers.

Quick reminder: These "Super Style" badges are available ONLY TO UNTAPPD INSIDERS.

Remind Me, What Are the "Super Style" Badges?

Our "Super Style" badges cover some of the top beer styles, getting a golden Insider makeover before we release them at various points throughout the year.

As an Untappd Insider, you'll have the exclusive opportunity to earn these "Super Style" badges by checking in that style of beer when it's live.

Last year, we released six different styles, and in 2023, we're kicking off with three new Insider "Super Style" Badges: American Lager, Pilsner, and Witbier.

Super Style: American Lager

Perhaps slightly misunderstood, lagers cover a surprisingly wide range of beers. For instance, malty dunkels, smoky rauchbiers, roasty schwarbiers, toasty Viennas, refreshing helles, crispy kölschs, intriguing Baltic porters, and more all fall under the category.

All these beers cover a wide range of colors and flavor profiles. But what makes these beers lager is the implementation of bottom-fermenting yeast—one that requires a colder, longer fermentation period than their ale counterparts.

American lager in particular pours out a pale straw gold. A clean malt bill, often featuring rice or corn, with very little hopping leads to a beer that's low-ABV, low-bitterness, and all crisp and clean. These are lawnmower beers, beach crushers, party pounders, and crowd pleasers, perfect for the warmer days ahead.

To earn the Insider "Super Style - American Lager" badge: Check in any beer with the style of Lager - American, Lager - American Light, or Lager - American Amber / Red. First beer earns level 1 and then a new level every 5 new unique beers. This badge does not have an end date and does not qualify for Retroactive Badges due to the requirement of an active Insiders subscription.

Super Style: Pilsner

Responsive image

Crisp and crushable, pilsners are a pale lager first produced by Bavarian brewer Josef Groll in Plzeň, Czech Republic, in 1842. Historically featuring the noble Saaz hop and characteristically soft water from Plzeň, Czech or Bohemian pilsners became a favorite for their pale golden color, slightly bready base, medium hop bitterness, and refreshing profile.

Today, you can find many variations of pilsners from different countries. Each with its own nuances and distinctions

For instance, German pilsners (often known just as pils) tend to be lighter and slightly less hoppy.

American pilsners, introduced when German immigrants brought over their brewing techniques, include barley malt and typically a quarter of rice or corn.

Most recently, Italian pilsners have benefited from a dry hop for a higher hop bite.

Nowadays, you can even find slow-pour pilsners that take seven minutes to pour!

To earn the Insider "Super Style - Pilsner" badge: Check in any beer with the style of Pilsner - Czech / Bohemian, Pilsner - German, Pilsner - Imperial / Double, Pilsner - Italian, Pilsner - New Zealand, and Pilsner - Other.
