Dallas Drinking Institution Closing Doors; Celebrate One Last Time!

After fifteen years of "Great Food and Better Beers," a Dallas drinking institution will be closing its doors. On Saturday, May 17th, the Meddlesome Moth, a sister concept of Flying Saucer and Rodeo Goat, will host its Bon Voyage Brunch. 

Co-founders Shannon Wynne and Keith Schlabs cited a seventy-three percent increase in the current rent as the main reason for the decision. "We simply can't afford to stay," they say. 

Wynne adds, "We wanted to not be too pricey and be a neighborhood restaurant. The guys that own the Design District, I don't know what rate they borrowed their money. I don't know what kind of return they're looking for, but it didn't fit into our plan for staying here."

The Meddlesome Moth debuted in 2010 as the first restaurant in the developing Dallas Design District. Today, the area has transformed into a bustling art community, thriving high-end restaurant hotspot, and exciting place to live. 

At the center of this neighborhood's growth, the Meddlesome Moth has flourished, bringing great craft beer and solid pub food to Dallasites. 

Greats from the industry, such as Avery Brewing Founder Adam Avery, Brooklyn Brewery Brewmaster and James Beard award-winner Garrett Oliver, and others from Dogfish Head, Peticolas, Prairie, Firestone Walker, Celestial Beerworks, and more, have all passed through the Meddlesome Moth's doors. 

And while each left their mark on the Moth, so too has this hallowed drinking emporium left a mark on them. You know what they say about a butterfly flapping its wings, right!?

According to Stephen Beaumont, co-author of The World Atlas of Beer, the Meddlesome Moth is one of his favorite beer destinations in the world.

Perhaps it's the mismatched sample tiles on the floor (something Wynne kept from the former tenant, Ann Sacks Tile Showroom). Or maybe it's the iconic three-stained glass windows featuring celebs like Elvis Presley, Chuck Berry, and Jerry Lee Lewis. 

For some, the food draws them in like a moth to the flame (sorry, we couldn't help the pun). Known best for its mussels and expansive brunch menu, the Moth had something for everyone. 

Obviously, it was always about the beer. With over forty taps, the Moth always boasted one of the city's best beer menus. 

"It's had a 15-year run. It's been very well received; it has a loyal following," says Wynne. "We're just gonna let it go the way of the dodo bird."

There are a few ways to catch the good vibes at the Meddlesome Moth before they fly away. 

The pub will host Local Brewery Happy Hours during its Anniversary Week with the following guests: 

  • Monday, April 21 - Celestial Beerworks
  • Wednesday, April 23 - Manhattan Project Beer Co.
  • Friday, April 26 - Peticolas Brewing Company
