10 Best Imperial / Double Stouts of 2022
Listen, spring may be just around the corner, but with snowstorms still raging across most of the country, winter hasn't taken it's last breath yet.
And there is no other type of beer we'd rather be drinking in front of the fire on a below-zero night than a hearty stout. Preferably one that has been barrel-aged, reaching upwards of 9-10% ABV.
The humble stout has come a long way. And there are so many fantastic stouts out there. Such as these wacky pastry stouts or these caffeinated coffee stouts.
But far and away the most popular versions of this style would have to be imperial and double stouts. In fact, in Untappd's Top Styles of 2021, these amped-up stouts ranked seventh with just shy of 2 million check-ins! No other stout category even cracked the top ten.
First popularized by Goose Island brewmaster Greg Hall, when he had the genius idea to age Goose Island's one-thousandth batch of beer in a bourbon barrel in 1992, imperial and double stouts are essentially stronger, richer, boozier versions.
Last year, we received a lot of fanfare when we posted about Untappd's 5 Highest-Rated Imperial / Double Stouts of 2021.
So in 2022, we decided to double down. Of course, the beer that started it all features heavily in the list, but you might find a few surprises here as well.
