Life Without Music

Goethe described music as “liquid architecture”, intangible cathedrals of sound that disappear as quickly as they materialize. The mind deconstructed to its most basic function could be characterized as a pattern seeking tool, an engine of prediction geared towards our social bonds and the tactile cycles of our natural surroundings. Our ability to organize the tumult set before us perhaps led to this fluke of joy in sound, but ultimately fate and coincidence seek to describe the same phenomena. Few qualities could be more innate than our fluency in this universal language: before we can even speak our own names, we become entranced with rhythm and melody.
