During the heady days of American brewing, long before the craft brewing renaissance started in the 1980s, most beer in the U.S. was an Americanized version of European pilsner.

Started by the flood of German immigrants in the 18th and 19th centuries and solidified by the waves of American soldiers returning from the World Wars with a thirst for European beer, American Lager became and remains the dominant style of beer in the United States.
