British great on the pump clip - Florence Nightingale
Florence Nightingale was born to British parents in Florence, Italy on May 12, 1820. After deciding a life of leisure wasn't for her she travelled to Germany to learn nursing at a Christian nursing school for women.
The Crimean War started in 1854. Florence along with a team of nurses were stationed at a British appallingly unsanitary military hospital at Scutari in Turkey.
Florence and her team worked tirelessly to improve the conditions of the hospital where more soldiers were dying from infectious diseases than from injuries recieved battle. Due to her patients now had a chance to recover and in return they called her "the Angel of the Crimea".
Florence's reports on her experience in the Crimea along with later reports on patient care would spark worldwide health care reform. She returned to her family home in Lea Hurst to a hero's welcome, including an engraved brooch that came to be known as the "Nightingale Jewel" from Queen Victoria. In 1908 she would receive the key to the City of London, the first lady to receive the award.
She died at the age of 90 on August 13, 1910, in London. Show Less
