In 1859 Abolitionist and Akron resident John Brown led an assault on Harpers Ferry in West Virginia. Brown believed that only an armed and violent revolt would end slavery and the muskets and powder held in the armory at Harpers Ferry were crucial to leading such a campaign. The attack ultimately failed, and Brown was captured by none other than Colonel Robert E. Lee of the U.S. Marines. John Brown was tried, convicted, and hanged for the assault. Show Less
