Born on 11th July 1274 and descended from nobility, Robert the Bruce supported his family’s ancient claim to the Scottish throne. He took part in William Wallace’s revolt against King Edward I of England and was himself eventually crowned King of Scotland in 1306, against all the odds.
A great guerrilla leader, he refused for years to meet the numerically superior English forces in a pitched battle until, at Bannockburn in 1314, he defeated a much larger English army, freeing him to consolidate his power in Scotland. He did on 7th June 1329, with his body being buried at Dunfermline Abbey, whilst his heart was interred in Melrose Abbey.
Our Robert the Bruce beer is a 5.2% traditional Scottish Ale, full bodied with some roast character, not too harsh or bitter and relatively sweet.
