Pull up a chair folks and let us tell you about this crazy ride we call Sharks With Laser Memes. For reasons we can not explain now, we thought it’d be amusing to make a New England style hazy Barleywine in late May of this year. We threw every citrusy hop we had at it. Citra, Mandarina Bavaria, Cashmere, Pacifica, and trust us the list goes on.
However, we knew we wanted to barrel age most of the batch, so we aimed for only a light temporary haze from additions of flaked wheat and oats. Its working title was Sharks With Frickin’ Laser Beams because it made a Dr. Evil amount of sense.
Despite employing a massive pile of whirlpool hops, the wheat and oats, and a large biotransformation hop addition early in fermentation, this beer was determined to be clear. Now we were just going to be the brand new brewery on the block serving super hoppy American Barleywine in the summer. What a bunch of weirdos.
Nevertheless, we persisted. We selected our favorite barrels from a variety of Willet Rye Whiskey and Port Barrel Finished Breckenridge Bourbon Barrels. As luck would have it, the batch filled exactly 4 barrels. No Barleywine-drinking weirdness in summer after all.
Fast forward 6 months and the bad news is 20 other breweries have named beers with our original working title for the project. However, the good news is we have an absolutely delicious offering from one of our Rye Whiskey barrels for you. Rich velvety caramel and oaky whiskey blends harmoniously with light orange fruitcake and raw cookie dough notes. In our expert opinions, it’s super yummy and you should get it in your tummy.
