Backwoods Brigade is brewed at our little farmhouse brewery and brings a taste of life from the country. The design of this beer was meant to take you back to 1821, when our farmhouse was built, and present a beer with possible similarities to brews created by local farmers of the era. Historically, farmhouse ales have never been a true “style”, as each farm would create their own beer based on ingredients they had access to. They were simple, refreshing beers made by farmers. So consider this is a true Smoked American Farmhouse Ale with a slightly different edge that your mouth will enjoy! You’ll find this ale slightly phenolic and earthy with a decent body, and a bit of smokiness, that’ll win your tastebuds over. How do we get the smokiness? The smoke comes from the malting process. Malted barley is dried over an open flame allowing the smoke to infuse with the grains. Except for a few select areas, this malting technique had become mostly extinct by the time of the American Civil War, but is seeing a small resurgence.
So what’s with the name? Hey, we proudly support our Troops & Veterans and know quite a few with roots in rural areas. We salute them! Show Less
