Tried and convicted for the murder of a local Fort Brooke soldier, Jose Perfino escaped custody only to be hunted down by a posse of the victim's peers. Justice levied, he was buried in Tampa's famous Oaklawn Cemetery, where some say he still haunts the grounds at night. His tombstone reads: "El Indio, Cuban Pirate, Killed 1850."
