Yaupon Holly

Native to the fertile soils of the East Texas bottomlands, the Yaupon Holly has been an important tree for thousands of years. Its leaves contain small amounts of caffeine and can be steeped into a weak tea. The treeis commonly used ceremonially by Native Americans as a purgative called the "Black Drink,". The berries are favored by several bird species and are an important source of food.
