In 1986, an enterprising local farmer was busy planting thousands of root-balls on 15 acres of land at the end of Airport Road and Broadway Ave. Local buzz accumulated, and stories were published in the local paper about Herb Porter's huge gamble, investing in a Kiwi Fruit plantation in Chilliwack! For three years, residents excitedly watched the trees mature - giddy with the the prospect that one day this small yet temperate B.C. town was on the verge of being a major Canadian supplier of exotic tropical fruit. And then it happened; a freak cold snap at the end of January '89. The trees did not survive.
