On March 1st 1876, Bristolian John Chiddy prevented the Flying Dutchman derailing and plummeting down into the Avon. A bridge’s keystone had fallen onto the track. He managed, in the nick of time, to lever it clear saving the lives of countless passengers… but he was struck by the train.
