Clipper

In 1885 George J. Renner Jr purchased a defunct brewery on Pike Street above the Mahoning River in Youngstown. His strength is something of mythology - said to load barrels onto wagons single-handedly and to have tossed a pro wrestler over his head during a quarrel. The company survived Prohibition and an explosion that killed one and burned the facility to the ground before closing for good in 1962. Remnants are still visible from 680 northbound. Distributed to the tri-counties in unique cone-top cans, Clipper Pilsner depicted a Boeing 314 (can circa 1940) that could takeoff and land on water. Columbiana Schools didn’t adopt the nickname until 1947, suggesting the mascot likely was influenced by beer. Pair with grit, adversity, and Coconuts. >: [
