Every now and then when you work with barrel aging of beer, you end up with leftovers. Perhaps the batch you brewed yielded more than there was room for in the designated barrels. Or the opposite could happen: you have a barrel or two too many. And sometimes you find yourself in the happy situation that the surplus beer can be paired with a leftover barrel. And that's exactly how the Tiny Batch Series was created. Born and nursed by our tender and caring Head Brewer, Jacob Storm, as if they were his own little babies. But ‘tiny' must be taken literally - there's only a few hundred bottles of each beer in this series!
When we make a new major release of barrel aged beers, whether it is the Double Mash series or the American Outlaws, we taste all barrels individually. Sometimes a barrel sticks out. Not that it’s bad or anything, it just tastes different from the other barrels containing the same beer. And blending it with the other barrels might impact the flavor profile we want. Then we put this stray barrel aside for a different use; it could be for a festival keg special, or - as in this case – for a new tiny Batch release. So, the barrel siblings to this beer eventually became Double Black Mash 2023 Rye Whiskey version, while this barrel with its very own distinctive personality rested on, soaking up more Rye and maturing further in its own right.
