Kiss of The Coppertail

First modern day sighting of the Tampa Coppertail was made by a 5-year old girl named Sofia on a wonderful late Spring afternoon in late March 2011. Her parents had taken Sofia on a leisurely walk of the boardwalks leading through the mudflats of Mackay Bay Nature Park. Suddenly Sofia gave a frightful cry and with her little shaking hand she pointed towards a point on the horizon and gasped “See the monster!” Her parents both looked in the direction their daughter had been pointing, but either it was their adult lack of imagination or the setting sun directly in their eyes that made them see nothing. Sofia however stubbornly insisted on having seen a huge sea serpent with fangs as long as totem poles. Sofia’s dad had total faith in his daughter, so he took the whole thing a step further. Digging into old archives at the local Tampa Bay History Center he found an old 16th century account by Spanish conquistador Hernando de Soto, who told of a gruesome sea creature that had sunk two of his ships simply by a flick of its powerful tail. Since then the Tampa Coppertail has been sighted many times, but it seems to have become way less mean-spirited since the time of the Spanish. Some local jetskiers even claim to have performed a stunt they call Kiss of the Coppertail. But since no clips of this Coppertail kissing can be found on YouTube, we will consider the rumors to be only big boys bragging.
