Reunion is a modern take on a historic lager. This look back in time is made possible by forward thinking in craft malt. To make it happen, we use an innovative malt that provides an integrated smoke flavor. Imagine a glass of cold brew coffee with defined, subtle notes versus a hot cup of intense French Roast.
Smoked malt from Central Europe is made, more or less, the same way today as it’s been made for a long, long time. Barley is exposed to burning wood or peat. This both kilns the barley with direct heat and hot smokes it. It creates an intense, smoke-forward, and sometimes acrid impression. Smoked malt (and smoked beer) was a byproduct of the kilning technology at the time, not necessarily the goal, but people developed a taste for it.
Advances in craft malting are once again moving beer forward, this time through inspiration from that smoke flavor we got a taste for so long ago. Cold-smoking malt is an innovative way our friends Epiphany Craft Malt developed to offer tempered and defined smoke flavor, avoiding potential harsh qualities or overdoing it. The barley is placed into a drum with smoldering wood that engulfs it with room temperature or “cold” smoke from the embers. This lends a gentle and clear smoke expression to the malt and eventually beer.
Reunion carries these cold-smoked characteristics to offer you full flavor with restraint. To us, it’s a balance of layered smoke depth and drinkability. Read Less

Hops rooted in soils made of sediment from today’s river & silt from yesterday’s glacial flood are testament to the unique agricultural character of a place and it’s produce.

Built upon a foundation of all Virginia craft malt, River + Flood channels what we love in a classic West Coast double IPA: an initial smooth bitterness gives way to a rush of tropical, dank, and peachy hop influence with a crisp finish.

This IPA is a showcase of Oregon-bred and grown Strata and Meridian hops from a single farm in the Willamette Valley.

The inspiration for the name River + Flood comes from the soil where these hops grow. Heavy rainfall causes sediment to flow from the Cascade and Costal Mountain Ranges into the Willamette River, leaving stratified river alluvium behind, offering the valley rich topsoil. This rests on the historic Missoula Flood Silts from the last Ice Age. The melting glaciers caused the Great Lake Missoula to rush across the land to the Pacific Ocean, leaving fertile silt behind. Combined, the stratified river alluvium and Missoula flood silts help create a unique growing environment that skilled farmers use to grow outstanding hops with a character all its own.

It's dark early in the Old Town this time of year. The cold, damp air cuts deep. Maybe it was here Gregor Samsa knew these same evenings. Walking across the Charles, the candlelight of a public house glows through old windows onto the cobblestones. Inside, a glass of malty respite on a chilly evening calls. As the door opens and heavy curtain is pulled back, a wave of warmth flushes out the cold. Greeted with head nods and a dark, roasty beer. It's that feeling. A bridge to the City of a Hundred Spires.

In process for years, we’re happy to introduce the second beer in our Estate collection: Barleywine 2020. This beer sets out to celebrate the flavors of the barley we grow in our field: first highlighted through malting, then concentrated through brewing, and finally melded in barrel.

100% of the grain in this beer was grown, harvested, fermented, conditioned, and packaged at Wheatland Spring. Planted in 2019 and harvested in 2020, the barley was custom-craft malted in small batches, yielding multiple roasts for layers of flavor. All of this was done especially for this beer by our friends at Murphy & Rude Malting.

Within days of leaving the malt house, the malt was double-mashed in our brewhouse, feet from where the barley once grew. The estate barleywine then aged for a year in Catoctin Creek Virginia-grown Rye Whisky barrels.

As the barleywine emerged from this slumber, it had much to say without the need for additional ingredients to find its voice. On approach, the ale offers a deep, round date sweetness from the roasted malts, tempered by a dry finish thanks to the oak. The lush caramel developed during the five hour boil moves gently through the mid-palate, revealing layers of toasted graham cracker, fig, and crème brûlée as it warms in your glass. The finish is a reminder of its stature and time in spirit barrels. This beer aims to thread the needle of decadence without overindulgence and complexity without over-complication. Read Less

Depart is made entirely from barley, triticale, and wheat we grow in the fields next to our brewhouse. We grow the triticale — and all of our grains — using nutrient-providing crop rotations with zero chemicals or poisons. In our case, it actually is beer from here: ground to grain to glass.

The triticale provides an interesting depth of wheat, with a playful spice note of rye on the mid palate and finish, seemingly carrying the beer’s effervescence from start to finish. The lager has a nice body without being weighed down and a subtle sweetness balanced by restrained hop bitterness, with the beer finishing dry. The hops accentuate the layers of malt flavors with top notes of wafting citrus and pleasant herb. Read Less

The capital of Bavaria offers much. For beer lovers, the city offers a chance to explore the depths of bottom fermented beer. It’s an embarrassment of lager riches.

In our years of living in Munich, the time of year was a guide for what brewery to visit and which beer to enjoy. Easy to be contented with a tall glass of Hefeweizen on a summer day in the Biergarten or a bottle of Kellerbier on the rocky shores of the river Isar. After experiencing the first couple of autumn-into-winter seasons, we started gravitating toward an Export Helles in the dark wood-clad restaurant attached to Munich’s oldest brewery. A bit bigger malt body, slightly elevated hop expression, and just a tick higher abv for those chilly afternoons.

We’ve paid homage to this beer previously as a barrel aged Export Helles — a tip of the hat to how it can be served in Munich. For this batch, we went with stainless to focus on exploring its bready malt depth and delicate hop aroma. Over two months in process from fermentation to horizontal lagering to conditioning. We grew 100% of the barley in this beer next to our brewhouse. This taste of place was amplified by custom malting the grains to different specs in small batches and blending this mixture in the mash tun. Karl brought some of his favorite hops from Austria — not possible to buy and the same they use in their celebrated Pilsner. It’s also the same Pils that turned us into fans of Schloss Eggenberg so many years ago. It was such a treat for us to make this beer together.

The two and a half months of production time allowed the custom estate malt and carefully selected hops to integrate, resulting in a smooth, full-bodied Pilsner with depth of character. This Pils offers rich layers of freshly leavened bread and sourdough crust with waves of floral and earthy hops. The grains and hops balance lead and supporting roles throughout the sip. Seems a good way to go about a partnership.

This beer is an ode to dreaming the impossible. To venturing down an improbable path, holding what's said to be out of reach. Two family breweries combining different traditions to make this beer. While our castles in the air may differ, we’ve discovered that creating foundations under each of them is much the same. Made with estate barley we grow next to our brewhouse and select Austrian hops from their valley. Its combination, culmination, and continuation.

We’d talked about making a lager on our farm since making a beer with Wunderkammer in Vermont a year ago. As mutual fans of triticale, it seemed the grain chose us for this project.

The more we explore grains we grow here on the farm, the more we enjoy getting to know what they’ve got to say. Our custom malted barley blend offers a balance of leavened dough and bread crust body before easing into the tempered sweet red berry impression we’ve come to love from our home-grown triticale. This beer finishes with delicate floral, herbal, and a hint of citrus aromatics from the whole cone hops. Read Less
