Pouring a hazy golden colour the first thing that hits you is the aroma of fresh hops pouring out of the glass. Light bodied with a lovely carbonation, this mid strength IPA certainly holds nothing back on flavour. Look for a citrus/piney hit of fresh hops on the palate with a light malt backing and slight bitterness. Read Less

This landmark pale encompasses our founding vision of ingenuity, our unwavering commitment to quality and the laid-back spirit of the South Coast - or as we Pirates prefer to call it, home.

Once poured, peach and citrus drift from the pint, spurring imagery of backyard trees laden with fruit. The first mouthful sends pineapple, sweet malt and a gentle bitterness across the palate. It’s light-bodied, cruisy and brewed with the session in mind.

We were born on the Nullarbor and raised in a shed on the Adelaide Plain, and while we continue to grow, some things will never change, like our passion for making great beer and our enduring love of the South Coast.

I can see Benny BBQ’s face now. “Another beer style on tap PL? I’ve only just wrapped my head around the IPAs!” Well I’m here to tell Benny not to fret. This sour is not here to complicate things. In fact, it’s so unavoidably drinkable, our Port Adelaide bar team have developed RSI from tilting pints towards its tap.

So how did we do it?

By introducing lactobacillus (good bacteria) into the kettle and leaving it to work over night, the brewed wort acquires a delicate and pleasant acidity. When paired with a generous dose of passion fruit pulp and Acai berry post fermentation, we invite more pucker to the party and a gorgeous rose blush colour to boot.

With a simple malt bill of 50% Pale and 50% Wheat, we allow the souring process and fruit additions to take centre stage. The small amount of Australian Enigma hops we use are added only for a lick of bitterness - no generous dry hop additions here.

The nose is summer, passion pulp driven and clean, picked lemon, raspberry sherbet, each bubble bursting to release a suggestion of the tartness to come.

Palate strikes fresh, lemon rind, stone fruits, tight acidity, a whisper of wheat malt leads to a clean, dry finish. Perfection.

A smooth 7.2% Stout brewed with Oats, Black and Chocolate malts, EKG and Columbus hops, Pirate Life Stout is perfect for the cooler months. The malts take centre stage with a cacophony of coffee, chocolate and sticky date pudding and a rich creamy mouthfeel thanks to the oats. Columbus smacks the palate with a healthy dose of bitterness and also works with EKG lending a gentle, earthy spiciness to the beer. The beer is an American style pale ale brewed with Pale and Munich malts to provide a smooth malty backbone to balance out the ample hops we threw at it. Hopco wanted to give some lesser known hop varieties some exposure so the following blend of hops were chosen: NZ Cascade, Motueka and Pacifica which together combine to give the beer a rich key lime pie / lemon curd cheesecake aroma and a light resinous character on the palate all backed up by a satisfying whack of bitterness. We'd like to think the NZ hop growers would get around a few pints of this one during their upcoming harvest. Read Less

No beer style has grown with the same momentum over the past two years as the New England IPA. Typically, the style is brewed with low bitterness, high haze and is packed full of fruit characters care of both yeast and hop selections.
For our third birthday we have decided to brew a variation of the style. Using the same basic blueprint but removing the haze. The idea behind the concept was to experiment and find out if we could impart the same luxurious juicy characteristics that we love about the style but have it crystal clear, crisp and summery. With our first two sours firmly under our belt, we’ve taken even greater steps to bring you something special for number three. An array of premium malts, heritage hops and tart boysenberry combine in a bold new release that will not only satisfy the soul during the cooler months, it will have you queuing up for another pint in record time. Enter the dark sour.

This is a visual beer. The kind you would see in your friends hand and say, “What the heck is that?” Followed closely by, “…and where the heck can I get one?” It’s deep, plum jam appearance is owed to over 200 kg of Boysenberry puree and the roasted malts Chocolate and Carafa III. As the head settles strawberry blonde, we’re reminded of that first iconic sparkling shiraz on Christmas Day. Time to dive in…

Robust boysenberry, milk-chocolate cake, young balsamic and fermented cherry greet the nose. The palate hits clean, rewarding with tight acidity, stewed boysenberry, dark chocolate and black forest fruits. Adding to this slew of excess is an unexpected umami driven back palate, delivering notes of brewed soy and roasted, unsalted peanut. Truly decadent stuff my chums.

You can thank Lactobacillus (along with our amazing brew team) for PL’s exemplary sour offerings of late. It’s brief 24 hour presence in the kettle is felt long after the acidic evolution of the wort has taken place. Gently hopped with Taiheke and Perle, it is brewed using six malted barley variants. Combined, they generate roastiness, and a soft sweetness that lingers on the palate like a chocolate stud from Haigh’s.
