We used a new kind of yeast, specifically bred and engineered to release tropical fruit flavors from hops called thiols. This is our first experiment with it. This is a lovely tropical drink by the pool that almost got named "Little Paper Umbrellas", but we couldn't pass up a biochemistry pun. (These thiols are bound to cysteine amino acids in the hops. This yeast has the ability to cleave that bond and release the compound into solution.) Citra, Mosaic, Nelson Sauvin and a little bit of Galaxy. Read Less

The founders of BGBC love the idea of forgotten beers - beers that were popular long ago, but various forces (economic, legal, simple changing of tastes) have driven them to extinction. Beer historians dig into old brewery records and try to figure out what a beer from a century ago would taste like.

This is our attempt at a style called London Brown, but done with modern ingredients on modern equipment. It’s sweet and chocolatey, but not heavy. At only 3.6%, you can enjoy a pint and then enjoy another one. We hope to bring lots of historical beer styles to you, and this is our first one. We can see why it was popular back in the day. Let’s bring it back!

When we discovered Skagit Valley Malting, based in Skagit county, we thought: “we could brew a beer for locavores, for the 100 mile diet.” The malt comes from less than 100 miles away, but it turns out that Yakima, the source of a lot of the world’s hops, is 111 miles from the brewery as the crow flies. Which... actually sounds better than “100 mile IPA”, so we ran with it - one hundred and eleven! Eleventy-one! Yeah!

We see this recipe as changing up each time we brew it. We’ll always have an IPA that was made with local ingredients, but we’ll have fun with it each time. This is batch 2, and this time around it’s a hazy, medium-strength IPA with citrusy Cascade and Amarillo hops for flavor and dry hopped with aromatic Azacca and Belma hops. And we left the wheat out this time. Read Less
