One hundred years ago the market town of Chesterfield was a thriving, bustling and hard-working industrial town, and the town’s breweries and their pub estates were at the very heart of the community. Brampton Brewery had a 130 barrel plant and they brewed 6 days a week at peak times - meaning a weekly production of almost 30,000 gallons of ale in a single week. It was also an age where brewers didn’t feel compelled to dress up their brews in fancy names and descriptions, they were just simple descriptions of what you were buying like “Brown Ale”, “Stout” and “Mild”. “Golden Bud” did seem to buck that particular trend and as a beer name it is about as fancy and descriptive as they went. Dark, roasted and jam packed full of flavour. Actually it’s very difficult to describe as the characteristics change so much the longer it is allowed to condition for. At its peak it is so rich you feel like asking if it will lend you a tenner.

Richer than a lottery winner, our take on Brampton Mild is not so much a meal in a glass as a 5-course banquet. Coffee, toffee and caramel tones tease your taste buds and warm your cockles.

We always wanted to include a mild in our standard range of beers, but were extremely cautious over calling it Brampton Mild. Anyone from the locality will have heard rumours and heresay about the original and legendary Brampton Mild, so we thought the safest option would be to ‘retire’ the name as a mark of respect to the original. However Chesterfield CAMRA then intervened, and asked us to re-launch Brampton Mild as our Festival Special for the Chesterfield BF in February, 2008, and we’ve never looked back. It was the talk of the festival, scooped more votes than any other beer over the weekend and took the Mild of the Festival award. We now tend to rotate between brewing Impy and Mild, so it’s doubtful we’ll have them both on at once, but equally doubtful we’ll never have a mild available. Read Less

If you’ve got this far then you must have read the descriptive on Golden Bud - so you’ll already know that the original Brampton Brewery didn’t have a team of marketing experts dreaming up flowery and evocative names for their beers. “Milk Stout” was about as risque as they got. And so it is that our standard session bitter, in keeping with those that brewed before us, is named simply “Brampton Best”. Read Less

Brampton Brewery finally succumbed to take-over in 1955. Warwicks and Richardsons of Newark purchased Brampton and it’s estate of pubs and promptly closed the brewery down. Throughout the estate of Brampton houses there was uproar over the disappearance of the much-loved Brampton Mild. Such was the furore that Warwicks took the un-precedented step of launching a brand new beer aimed and marketed specifically to quench this particular thirst. They launched “IMPY”, which was unashamedly marketed as the Brampton Mild recipe, but without the Brampton water (which they couldn’t use) and without the Brampton yeast (which they wouldn’t use). We can’t get hold of the Brampton Mild recipe, and the yeast is long gone, but we are using Brampton water. Therefore as a mark of respect to the much loved and fondly remembered Brampton Mild, our interpretation will only bear the Impy name. Read Less

The rich and roasted malt notes defy the pale colour in this special bitter. Brewed as a one-off for St. George’s day it went down so well it’s made a number of re-appearances since for significant national events, and has a great following in bottle. A traditional bitter-style ale, the pale colour defies a rich maltiness normally associated with a darker ale.

We laboured long and hard over this one. Sick and tired of seeing classic English pubs making elaborate celebrations for St. Patrick’s day, and yet very little for our own dear St. George, we decided to brew a special for April 23rd. It went down a storm, and although it’s not been an ever-present it has made a number of important contributions from the bench coming on to score last minute winners. For the 100 or so years that the original Brampton Brewery were operational, the whole area around Brampton was synonymous with 2 industries in addition to brewing, namely brick making and pottery. The logo of the strong arm and brick hammer pays homage to this.
Wasp Nest was one of the larger brick making factories that existed in Brampton, and the great-grandfather of our very own Dave Hattersley was a Director of Wasp Nest. Read Less

A pale, slightly-sweet summer ale. Oat, wheat and pale-crystal malt combinations provide the back-drop for lots and lots of late-hopping utilising Motueka from New Zealand, and Chinook and Cascade from the States.

Named after the Griffin Foundry, the building of which still stands on Goyt Side and is Chesterfield's oldest industrial building. Dating back to the 1770's Griffin Foundry had links with Richard Arkwright at the height of the industrial revolution. 200 years ago it was producing cannon ball and ordnance for the Napoleonic wars, and no less than a quarter of the total iron output of the County of Derbyshire was being produced here. When Brampton Brewery was in it's 1940's hey-day it had a pub called "The Griffin" on nearby Wheatbridge Road. Read Less

We wanted to try our hand at an American IPA using American Hops & we sourced a new hop (for us) called Centennial & so when we trying to come up with a name for the beer we were looking for something that happened 100 years ago (i.e. Centennial) with an American connection & what we found out was that in 1919 , the legendary Baseball player Babe Ruth (pictured) was transferred from the Boston Red Sox to their bitter rivals, the New York Yankees & subsequently the Red Sox went on a 'trophy-less' run stretching from 1919 right upto 2004 & so the 'Curse of the Bambino' was created - Bambino being Babe Ruth's nickname. Our take on 'Curse Of The Bambino' is a 4.4% 'reddish' American IPA and we hope you enjoy it. Read Less

A Barley Wine was always on our hit-list - we just never imagined it would be so successful! It's maybe not as strong as some takes on this style of ale, but a) we wanted it to be very commercially viable and b) we can't get any more malt in our mash-tun. The name was inspired by a trip to Chesterfield's German twin-town of Darmstadt during the very cold winter of 2010, and a conversation with the Braumeister of Grohe Brewery. He explained how German brewers brew a winter ale called a "Bock" Beer - dark in colour and sweeter in nature - and went on to explain the reasoning behind the name which may, or may not, be true. He reckoned that many, many years ago there was a brewing monastery in a German town called "Einbeck" (I don't even know if the town exists, let alone if I've spelled it right) and the locals would buy the beer by asking for it by the town-name - "Einbeck". Now I didn't take German at school, but even I know that the German for "One" is Eins - so people asking for "Einbeck" eventually got misconstrued as "One Bock". Read Less
